Chapman vs. Muhlenberg

While I recognize that these two are very different programs with different degrees, Chapman and Muhlenberg are my two top choices and I will most likely be attending one of them. I was wondering about how focused each of these schools are on musical theatre - how many mainstage musicals vs. straight plays are put on each year, if theatre performance majors take voice and dance classes, etc. because I would like to focus on straight acting. Any information about these programs would be greatly appreciated

We know one student at Chapman (who as a freshman starred in their one musical this year). And also know a few students at Muhlenberg and believe they only did one musical this year as well. When I searched both colleges shows, they mostly came up with straight plays. So in that sense, looks like they “may” only perform one musical a year. Now beyond that in regards to classes I am not sure. But you should be able to find out relatively easily from their websites, etc. You should also be able to google their prior seasons and see if this year is the norm. Congrats on two great choices!

They are soooo different! Don’t know how you will choose. Does location and climate matter to you?

Purely from what I’ve heard, Chapman isn’t particularly strong in MT; it is very very strong in film acting.

Around the Philly regional theatre scene at least, Muhlenberg has a strong MT reputation. Don’t know about its straight acting reputation.

The question is not how many musicals they stage, but what the training is - that’s not performance necessarily, that’s in class work - and what their staff/alumni networking is like.

If you would like to focus on straight acting, do you know if you want to focus on film acting? Chapman is going to be very strong there.

However, your question would honestly be best directed by looking closely at each school as opposed to asking here, because here you’re going to get random internet folks like me!

You can ask the heads of the departments your questions, or current students.

I think you could get a lot answered by taking a close look at their curriculum and coursework for each year. This is available on their website–it will list what courses you have to take for the major. Look at these courses. You will be able to get a description of each class by going to their course catalogs.

I would also look up the professors who work there and teach the classes. Do they also work professionally? If so what do they do? For instance, are they directors? If so, do they mostly direct MT or straight? If they’re actors what sorts of acting do they do? Etc. Also look at alum. Where do they tend to work? How many are in MT, straight theatre, and film?

Thank you so much @stagedoormama and @connections ! connections, I was accepted into their Theatre Performance class but the curriculum also includes acting for the camera, and they told us during the audition that lots of Theatre Performance kids get to be in student films, and Screen Acting majors get to be leads in mainstage shows. I also saw on Muhlenberg’s website that Performing Magic is an elective, so maybe that’ll factor in to my decision
