Character Limit

On some of the common application supplimental short-response questions, there are huge character limits... For example, Colgate asks "How did you first learn about Colgate?" and allows 7900 characters. That seems like a completly unnecessary amount for such a question... So I was wondering, would I be penalized for only using 475 characters?

no, it's short response.
Only use it if you have a HILARIOUS story about how your best friend's uncle's monkey was in your room and somehow brought Colgate's info up on your computer and then your entire family has a Leave it to Beaver moment and gently scold the monkey about doing something crazy and then have a grand laugh about it.

Haha. That's funny because it ACTUALLY HAPPENED.

Kidding.

7900 characters is a 4 page double spaced essay of about 1200 words. That certainly doesn't sound right at all!
I'm sure you'll be fine with what you have for that particular question. A short response really shouldn't be more than a paragraph I'd think.

Awww, sammie...
you had my hopes up for a second that I was psychic...
