Cornell has its own business program now.

o wow thats awesome…shouldve applied there too lol

It’s had a couple of different business programs for decades. It’s just that AEM has been named.

Will this change anything?
E.g. more funding, more faculty…etc?

yes, this will change (hopefully) how well-known AEM is among prospective students. one of the major problems that AEM ambassadors have been trying to work on is recognition… since a lot of us dont even know about AEM until senior year or 'til it’s too late. we were actually debating where they could put AEM and this was brought up, along with how it would be great if Mr. Dyson would donate and have AEM named since he already donates for scholarships… and voila it happened lol.

So what does this mean for the program? It’s now an actual school instead of just a major?

are there any other examples of a school being within a college at Cornell? I can’t think of anything like that…so I think it might even be more confusing to prospective students.

Sage School of Philosophy, Sibley School of Mechanical Engineering.

I believe there are some others, but obviously the business majors are much bigger prestige whores and like their names.

Hummm…
Does this mean AEM will have the chance to become a stand-alone “school” like Hotel and ILR?

thoughts on bouncing out of hotel for aem? im interested in finance

Do you think the name “Dyson School” will catch on, or will students still say they are in AEM?

i dont know that it would become a full blown “school” or college like hotel or ILR… especially since CALS is land grant and NY residents get reduced tuition. that would be a whole other administrative challenge…

i dont think having a name associated with AEM has everything to do with prestige… i just feel that now it would be easier to refer to the “business program” of cornell as the dyson school instead of a “department” within the Ag school.

i think i would still say AEM instead of Dyson, but who knows.

what does this mean for agricultural (non-aem) majors?

or is this just a name change?

you mean other majors in CALS? they arent affected at all. it’s just a name change and some funding for AEM (i think). how exactly AEM will change… we’ll have to wait and see?

Everybody will be calling it Dyson in a year.

aem is always talked about but does cals offer accounting, finance and other degrees? or is it all a division of AEM?

Finance, accounting, etc are all specializations in the AEM major.

There was a lot of talk of merging AEM with PAM, ILR, and the various other “business programs” (AKA hijacked majors) into one big 'ol school to save money. I guess this puts the kibosh on that, which I’m grateful for.

i second that malan89. we were really against putting all the business majors in one pot.

Other colleges definitely have specific schools for majors. There’s a School of Applied and Engineering Physics for Engineering Physics Majors in the College of Engineering. Just Google it. The fact that AEM has now it’s own school probably won’t impact the students much, just the recognition.
