Cheap ABET programs with high acceptance rates... in beautiful natural locations!

Looking for:

  1. Nature
  2. Cheap
  3. ABET Mechanical Engineering
  4. High Acceptance Rates

Here are schools I’ve found, that fit the bill more or less (in order of increasing cost):

South Dakota State
Arkansas Tech University
South Dakota School of Mines and Technology
Lake Superior State
New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology
Montana State
New Mexico State
University of Alaska - Anchorage

Here are schools that looked very promising but that I ruled out because of cost, location, or major offerings:

Michigan Tech
Oregon Tech
Fairbanks
NAU
Embry Riddle
Clarkson
University of Southern Maine
Montana Tech
All schools in CO ($)

I think tech schools would be a better fit for me, but I am not totally opposed to larger-sized schools.I don’t care about prestige at this point, I think all ABET programs are respectable. I am just looking for something cheap and in a beautiful natural location.

Thanks in advance!

Big thanks to users @moooop , @newjerseygirl98 , @nanotechnology , @simba9 , @insanedreamer , @fractalmstr , @“Erin’s Dad” , and @whenhen for their help in my previous thread. I really mean it, you’ve helped a ton already!

Add Wyoming to your list.

How did you judge the cost factor? Some schools might have high sticker prices but lower actual COAs because of good FA. Did you take that into consideration?

@dodgersmom Wyoming seems like a fine option. It is a large school, which I am not overly-excited about, but of the large schools it seems like a fine option.

@thatrunnerkid I judged cost by sticker price without FA because I will be running out of financial aid within 1-2 years (transfer student). I may need to take 3 years for the engineering program, so I need to consider the sticker price for my last 1-2 years.

It might be a good idea to talk to advisors from the schools you listed to see how long you’d need to study at there then.

If you are scholarship qualified your list is going to look a lot different.

@TooOld4School I have a 2.6 gpa and have 117 semester credits so I cannot count on significant scholarships or financial aid

So, just in case this list can help someone, here are the 10 schools I’m applying to:

South Dakota school of mines and tech
South Dakota state
New Mexico institute of mining and tech
New Mexico State
Arkansas tech
Lake Superior state
Oregon tech
Montana state university
University of Wyoming
University of nevada reno

I am taking advantage of the western undergraduate exchange to lower oregon tech’s tuition

Some other good schools:
Northern arizona university
Ohio state university
University of Ohio

There you have it, some cheap schools in nice locations that offer mechanical engineering.

If you are looking for a nice location, I’d apply to NAU over NMSU or NM Tech. Many of the Washington State campuses also offer ABET accredited mechanical engineering and are part of WUE

Transfer student…

How much CAN you pay each year?

What is your home state?

What is your EFC?

Fort Lewis College (but general engineering not mechanical)
