Checking Undecided as Major?

Is there any disadvantage to checking "undecided" on college apps or for Nat. Merit forms?

My top choices for college are Harvard, Yale, UPenn-Wharton, and JHU. I realize that I won't get merit aid. From the point of admissions, I was wondering whether it would be disadvantageous to check "undecided".

My counselor said that it doesn't matter, but I was wondering whether colleges would interpret it as being indecisive and not having like a specific aim?

thnx

My nieces have ALL been admitted to nearly all the schools they applied to as undecided majors. One "bad" thing is that some merit money is attached to specific schools & as undecided, you wouldn't be in competiton for these funds/scholarshps. Another thing is at some Us, it may be easier to get into specific programs/schools as an entering freshman than later. Some folks make part of their decision about which school to attend based on whether they have been admitted to study the program/field they're most interested in.

Most colleges understand that HS seniors often don't REALLY know what they want to study for the next 4 years. My son only knows he likes math, science & computers & plans to study them. His counselor suggested engineering, so he applied to his schools as an undeclared engineering major & was admitted to them on this basis.

bump.......

When I went and visited UCLA I talked with the dean of admissions and she told me that undecided is her favorite major because it means the students are open to exploring the school's possibilities. I got into all my schools except for one with an undecided major.

It's about as irrelevant as can be. I'm convinced it's more so they and you can share a good laugh four years later.

besides, the average college student changes their major at least 2x
