chem 1a and 3a

if i take Chem 1A at a community college this summer, will Chem 3A at berkeley be too hard?

First of all you don't want to take Chem 1A at a community college if you are a science major. And since your taking chem 1A I assume you are a science major. Second of all, Chem 1A does not help your outlook in Chem 3A. It has very little relevance to Organic Chemistry.

I believe med schools will frown upon fulfulling chem 1a at a CC after your high school career. If you want, you can take it to get at a CC then again at Berkeley, so it'll be much easier

thanks windstruck and misterreach.

i'm pre-dental by the way with non science major. Chem 1A, 3A, and 3B are pre-requisite courses but i only took regular chem in my sophomore year of high school. i didn't think i'll do very well in Chem at Cal.
I like your idea misterreach, but taking chem 1a in cc and retaking it in Cal is basically repeating courses. will dental schools accept this?

Think again before you do anything at a community college. It might be true that Berkeley don't care about what courses you take at a community college as long as you keep it to yourself and not transfer your grade. However, medical school, pharm school, dental school, and just about any other grad school will want to know about your ENTIRE college curriculum and yes you might've guessed already this includes all college level coursework taken at a community college. So, it will not look good to take General Chemistry twice.

However, here are some comforting words from me. I took Chem 1A as a freshmen and got an A-. Then I eventually went to take Chem 3A/3AL and 3B/3BL in which I got B+/A and A/A respectively. I'm not trying to brag but these grades are not easy to come by at Cal and guess what I took regular chemistry in High School and I don't even remember how to calculate the atomic weight during the 1st day of class at Chem 1A! My advice would be to take a lighter class load and concentrate on these core classes that are essential to your dental school application. It really isn't about the grade you WANT to learn the material and learn it well because it will come back to haunt in when you're taking entrance exams.

Note: As far as the CC thing. I'm having some trouble right now with Math 1B that I will be taking next semester because I forgot most of it. I signed up for Math 1B equivalent at a CC and eventually found out the things that I just told you. So now I'm studying on my own.

Best

thank you windstruck. some things that I knew already but you really clarified everything for me. i hope i can do as well as you did in those classes.
as of now, i'm considering taking chem classes at Cal during summer so I can fully concentrate on these classes.
