Chem calculations

How on earth do I get logarithmic values for the acid-base sums without a calculator!?

You’ll only ever have to find logarithmic values of numbers like 1.0 x 10^-6, which really isn’t that hard: log(1.0 x 10^-6) = -6.

If you have to find the log of a number that isn’t a multiple 10, you should just make an approximation. For instance, you know that 2.0 x 10^-6 is between 1.0 x 10^-6 and 1.0 x 10^-5, and so its log value should be between -6 and -5. This will be enough information for you to correctly answer any log-related SAT question.

OK, so basically I won’t get some crazy value to use in my calculations? Thanks!

Yeah, don’t worry. And if you have to find the log of a number that isn’t a multiple of 10, there will only ever be one answer choice that will fit your approximation. Once again, if you have to find the log of 2.0 x 10^-6, and you know that the value will be between -5 and -6, there will only be one answer choice between -5 and -6.
