Hi guys,

I just had a quick question about one of the classes I am taking this year. I am in incoming freshman, and am taking General Chemistry for engineers. I have heard mixed reviews about this class, and I thought I could get some more opinions with people who actually took the class. Is chem or engineers harder than general chem? Thanks in advance :)

It’s easier and covers less material.

The first semester is pretty much high school level chemistry and not that difficult. Given the huge enrollment (500+), there will obviously be a lot of people who don’t agree with that statement, but that is just the nature of large college classes. You have two 55 minute lectures a week as well as a 55 minute recitation in which you have quizzes and can ask questions about homework problems/lecture topics. The second semester has more difficult topics and for some reason there are no recitations, which means that you need to keep up with the material on your own. Overall, it’s definitely easier than gen chem.

Take Gem Chem for Engineers if you decide to take chem at rutgers. There will be a curve because its a weeder course like calc 2 and statics where they try to eliminate the non-true engineers.

Honestly if you aren’t Chemical/Biochemical, Material Science, or Biomedical Engineering then it might be a better choice to take it at community college during the summer. The beauty of engineering system at rutgers allows non major courses be able to be taken at community college if it transfers. Check it at njtransfer website. The summer courses taken in your county might cost $80-120 per credit during the summer but if taken out of county it will cost more.

If chemistry isnt your cup of tea then you should think about it. Put your GPA and course load in your thought when deciding. Even though a “C” is ok it is a 2.0 on gpa scale with maybe the other classes you might take like calc, physics, expos, matlab.

Also, extended analytical physics meets more often with same credits but the course is wayyyyy easier. Better professor with good TA/recitation.

Alright thanks so much… I am planning on doing Biomedical Engineering, and I am also taking analytical physics lol…
