can somebody please explain to me what exactly is a chem free dorm? thanks

No drugs/alcohol are tolerated whatsoever.

In some places it is not the entire dorm but a part of the dorm like a wing or so. My D is in such a room. Likes it fine, the parties are elsewhere.

so it only applies to having alcohol in the dorm, what one does outside of the dorm is his/her own business?

Sometimes. Some programs crack down on coming back drunk or whatever, it varies by school. It's useful to remember that since the rather vast majority of people in dorms are under 21 they are in effect "chemical free" anyway, they just crack down on the ones such labeled harder. So, in general, if you want to drink at all you shouldn't live in a substance free dorm if you have a choice. Specifically to your school, you'd have to talk to someone from there.

Like Chuy said, generally if you want to drink (or do any sort of drugs), you shouldn't live in chem free housing. I know of a girl at my school who lived on a chem free floor was seen smoking by her RA. She was asked to leave chem free housing, as even tobacco was a violation of the chem free floor policy. Thankfully, she was able to switch rooms with another girl who wanted chem free housing. You'll want to be very clear on what your school's policies are if you choose to go with chem free housing.

You can't have or use drugs or alcohol in the dorm or come back to the dorm while under the influence. Of course, this is all assuming they catch you.

Do most schools offer some chem free alternative?

That's a dorm where no students are taking Chemistry, and therefore, there is less studying in general.

lol

Seriously though, "chem free" or "substance free" dorms are usually a bad idea. There've been a few threads on this before, search for them.

at BC, if youre caught on campus drunk or come back to the room under the influence you can get kicked out of your housing. definetly dont recommend it unless you are adamantly against drinking and have friends who dont drink either. because you can get written up for just being at a party with alcohol.

i would expect that its easy to get work done on that floor at any hour of the day/week

Besides alcohol-allowed dorms it's supposed to be a substance-free dorm. But that's usually the case for all undergrad dorms where generally students under 21 lodge.

I think chem-free dorms are geared towards for students who do not intend to party but be studious all the time... but I think that depends on the respective college. It's like that for atleast one of my friend's school.

Wish we had chem-free dorms. I live in the honors magnet dorm, so you'd think people would be more study-oriented--but noooo, all four close neighbors are drunks who keep letting their screaming packs of morons run down the hall at random hours of the night. Gah. I've gone out and yelled at them twice in the last week.

I'm in the same situation as SolaCatella and it's so true. Really though, if you're not die-hard about being straight-edged, don't do chem-free.
