How are the Substance Free dorms at umich?

My parent made me join substance free dorm. Since its college, I want to have the college experience which includes drinking. What are the substance free dorms like? Are they still fun??

I didn’t think there was an entire building that’s substance free, just individual rooms and maybe halls. The rules are stricter there about drinking. A buddy of my roommate got caught with alcohol last year in his sub free room and he had to be out of the dorms within a week and had to find someplace else to live.

If I were you, just to be on the “safe” side, I would just drink elsewhere.

I lived in substance free housing last year and I loved it. However, substance free is no different from other parts of the dorm. Rather it is an added commitment that you make in order to strengthen a substance-free campus. You will definitely find people who have the same interests and concerns against the use of substance, but at the same time you will also find people who would do almost anything to get a drink. Personally, I don’t think substance free is that much better than the rest of the dorm, since it’s illegal to have alcohol in the building under any circumstance. The “plus” side which made me like it was the people in my hall, they were the best group of peers I’d ever met. My suggestion would be to take advantage of the substance free housing and have a clean freshman year.

Unless you are 21, there is absolutely no point in worrying about a substance free dorm. Everyone drinks in dorms, the key is to not get caught.

Yeah, I don’t understand…*** is the point of a “substance free” dorm for freshman?! Isn’t it illegal to drink ANYWHERE in the U.S. anyways?

I believe there are more regulations besides just “no alcohol” but I can’t remember the specific policy, might be worth looking into if you get a sub free room.

Bear in mind not every freshman is going to be living with another freshman. If a freshman is paired with a junior/senior that is of age, the older roommate can have a small amount of alcohol in the room for personal consumption, which roommate may not be comfortable with. If she had gotten a sub free room, regardless of the age of her roommate there would be no alcohol in the room.

Emaheevu is correct. Substance free housing is also tobacco free. The penalties for being caught with drugs/alcohol/tobacco are more severe than other rooms. Substance free is still fun, but go to a friend’s room if you’re worried.

Another thing about substance free dorms is that your roommate will be less likely to drink (in or out of dorm room). Probably many exceptions though

Which dorms are substance free?

^ there are certain rooms in I think almost every dorm that are substance free, you have to choose it when you sign up for housing.

That is correct, sub free rooms are everywhere. You can also be assigned sub free as a freshman even if you didn’t select it.
