Chem major - question about Calc 1, 2

Hi guys. I was wondering if there were any Chem majors here that could help me out. I am signed up to take MATH 145 at Bama this fall, for my first semester freshman year. But, I placed out of it with AP credit, and if I drop it, I can take a Spanish class (which I am hoping to double major in).

From experience, if I made an A in AP Calc AB and a 4 on the exam, would I be ok to go straight to Calc 2, or to skip a semester and take Calc 2 this spring?

Also, do you even think I should take Calc 2 if it is not required? Would having, basically an elective, Calc 2 help me with my Chemistry at all??

Thanks in advance.

-RTR

If you feel comfortable with Calc 1, go ahead and skip it. I did the same and I was fine throughout the rest of my math classes in college.

You’re definitely going to have to take Calc 2, though. I think at most schools, to get a degree in chemistry (not biochemistry), you need Calc 1-3, DiffEQ, and Linear Algebra.

Thanks for your reply  greatly appreciated… I really don’t want to take Calc 1 again anyway, so I’m glad that it is at least do-able to skip it.

As far as Calc 2, it isn’t on the list of required ancillary courses for my degree. Would you still suggest taking it anyway then?

Higher level Chemistry requires quite a bit of math, especially if the Physical Chemistry courses at your school are taught from a heavy math perspective.
