Chem/Physics at the same time--I'll be good, right?

Is that manageable?

Also, at my school, the Bio sequence starts in the Spring (LAC; don't ask), which means that second semester, I have three science classes.

Which leads to my two questions:

1) Do you think Chem/Physics + two other classes would be manageable (Stats/Spanish)?

2) If I only took three classes in the Spring (Chem/Physics/Bio), would this be overkill? Even for science majors?

thanks...

Go for it unless there’s a certain GPA you need to have for something and you’re not well above that GPA.

Chem/Phys/Stats/Spanish isn’t that hard of a course load. You should be able to handle that pretty well.

Cool… and as for the second semester? I took AP Bio in HS, so it won’t be too surprising, although I’ve never taken Physics (itll be calc-based, but for non-majors). I took Calc I/II in HS, but that was junior year (rising sophomore).

It’s not overkill at all - if you’re a science major, naturally most of your classes will be science courses every semester. I’m a neuroscience major, and out of 8 classes next year, 6 or 7 will be science related. So if you’re studying Bio, Chem, Physics, Biochem, Neuro or Microbio, you’ll likely be doing 3-5 science classes per semester over the years. If you’re a non-science major, this may be harder for you since science courses usually have labs and are more time consuming. It also depends on the course itself (Gen chem was fine, I hear Orgo is hard) and the professor.

About Spanish, it depends how comfortable you are with foreign languages. A lot of people find Spanish easy since they studied it in HS.

I would go for the first option. I know plenty of people who have taken Chem and Physics together in one semester.

I know I am, and it shouldn’t be a problem (at least I hope not).

At my school it was pretty hard. I took honors calc, physics with calc, and chem, as well as philosophy first semester, and econ second. There was only 1 other person i know of that attempted the same schedule as mine, but he took different classes. He took regular calc, noncalc based physics, and accelerated chem. We both made it through, but I probably could have done much better if there were more hours in the day. I think I managed my time pretty well, getting all chem labs done the day after the lab, starting my physics problem sets the weekend they were assigned. But I just couldn’t find enough time to do all my calc homework, that was the class that was always on the back burner for me. It is entirely possible to do it, but looking back I probably shouldn’t have first semester. Second semester I was ready.

I think it depends on your high school preparation. My daughter had 5s on AP Bio and Chem and found the classes to be time consuming because of the labs but mostly review. She had a different language and a social science that semester as well. Finals week she could have used a little more sleep but the grades she got were great. Keep yourself organized. I’ll bet you’ll do fine.
