Hi, I was just accepted ED to Johns Hopkins and am extremely excited about attending. I love the campus and I love Baltimore. However, I've been thinking about my career over the last few weeks, and I realized that I'd like to work in a heavy industrial/manufacturing environment (eg. paper mill, power plant, oil refinery...) rather than in a research role. So, I guess what I'm asking is, given this preference, how strong is JHU's Chem and Bio Eng program? Does JHU have internship connections with industrial employers? I just get a bit nervous at the bio part at the end of the name as my future career wouldn't have much to do with biological processes. I realize that I should have researched this beforehand, but any insight would be appreciated

yea you’re fine… Hopkins rules when it comes to chemistry and biology.

You should talk to some students and alumni from the ChemBE program to get a better perspective on this but, as a recent-ish alumn (totally unrelated major) who knows some people who went through that major, I’ve gathered that the department doesn’t have strong ties (or job placement results) with the big oil companies, but has a solid job placement record with other industrial companies. While some people go into the program with the goal of working in pharma, others go into other ChemE kinds of jobs. But, again, try to get in touch with people from the department to check up on that because I’m not at all knowledgeable about the field.
