Im currently a Chemical Engineering major (Spanish minor) at UF, but may want to pursue an investment banking career in the future. Would a Engineering degree look good? OR should I look into a additional Economics/Accounting major?

an additional*

Do you have the time to do a double major?

A major in either (Business) Economics and Chem Engineering or Accounting and Chem Engineering seems to be a massive workload since none of them offer much elective credits.

A Finance and Computer Engineering Double Major would be pretty badass.

I agree, if you could pull that off…you would be set. Accounting and all Engineering programs at UF have full plans so it almost seems impossible. But then again, one of my old teachers came out with a triple major in three years.

If I didnt do the business major… would I still have opportunities in investment banking with a chemical engineering degree?

I don’t know, how far are you in in Chem Engineering? What is your standing (Freshman, Sophomore, etc). Usually investment bankers majored in Finance from what I have seen.

You could go IB. Engineering shows strong quantitative skills. It will be harder to compete with finance majors, but you have great potential as an engineer. You could always get an MBA and then do IB, too. If majoring in finance would land you a higher GPA, switch IMO.

GPA is, of course, of up most importance but you could go into the Quant side of I-Banking with an Engineering degree. Look into Financial Engineering. The I-Bankers I know, don’t have Finance undergrads. They hold MSFs and Ph.Ds in Finance.

As a freshman, I had an interview with JP Morgan for investment banking and I’m an environmental engineering major (it was a program where they’d fly me to their headquarters for a day and try to get me to potentially work for them). They definitely asked me about all my science courses and lack of business courses. What saved me was that I took AP Macro senior year, and I actually got the position in the program! (I also told them that engineering provided me with a logical way of thinkining, which is very useful in the finance industry). With a Chem E degree, you could go into IB… you’d just need to show proficient knowledge of the finance industry (internships, courses, etc).
