Are there any good places to major in Chemical Engineering that do not cost a small fortune?

Is MIT really worth the extra $150,000 it will cost a middle class parent that has saved money for retirement, but has not put it into a retirement account?

What can a graduate with an MIT Chemical Engineering degree expect in the way of a starting salary , what about a graduate from the University of Alabama?

My brother is a ChemE from UConn. Granted, he graduated in 1976 (did I mention he’s my older brother), but he found a job right after graduation and is now head of R & D making great money. UConn’s engineering school is very well respected.

In my opinion, MIT is not worth an extra $150,000 in Chemical Engineering. There are many excellent Chem E. school that cost a lot less. (e.g. U of Minnesota)

UDel is supposed to be top notch for Chem E. With close by Dupont footing the bill for research and some scholarships.

And speaking as someone who has hired them, I wouldn’t pay more for a Chem E coming out of MIT than I would for them coming out of anywhere else. So even if you managed to get $10K more a year it would take a long time to earn back the $150K. Then again, I might be tempted to think that the MIT grad is only here for a little while anyway as she has to make more than I can pay. So give me the other grad.
