Chemical engineering: Yale, Tufts, Rochester, WPI

Hi everyone.

I want to do chemical engineering or something close to it. I got rejected from Princeton, Brown and Cornell about whose engineering programs I had heard great stuff.

Tufts hasn't announced decision yet. But so far I'm in Yale and University of Rochester and WPI.

I haven't heard good things about Yales engineering. I love science but I still want a liberal arts education with quite a lot of humanities. And WPI is just too concentrated. And I haven't heard good things about their teachers.

But among the four, which gives me the best chance of
A) getting a good overall education
B) getting a job (even after just undergrad so I can make money to go to grad school. Not looking to get rich.)
C) getting research opportunities
D) getting enough attention from profs?

I won't lie, I'm dazzled by Yale. I still love Tufts and Rochester. Not a fan of WPI.

Net price and debt at each school?

Well I have to pay least in Yale. Though Rochester is still considering me a for a full tuition scholarship.

I’m befuddled as to why you bothered to apply to WPI if you had no intention of enrolling there.

In any event, I suggest you determine which sub-discipline of Ch-E interests you because schools differ in their strengths. For example, you may not find much research going in Chemical Processes engineering at Yale, but they certainly do a lot of Biochemical research. U of Rochester is also very good, perhaps even generally stronger than Yale in traditional engineering overall. UR’s program of undergraduate study is also quite flexible.

WPI was my safe school.

Isn’t it a little unfair to ask me to know exactly what sub discipline I want to do research in when hardly anyone is even sure of their major at this age? I know I enjoy organic chemistry. I’ve taken enough bio courses to know Biochemistry would also interest me. But I also love inorganic chemistry and processes. How am I supposed to know? What if I change my mind?

Dude. Go to Yale. If purely for the simple fact that it is the cheapest. Go to Yale. If you find out you want to focus on something a bit different, that is what grad school is for and you can make a new decision then. I don’t see how you could pass up the experience.

I’m begging to think that I can’t. Really really can’t. If I give up Yale, a school I was dreaming about for two years, I’ll go insane. I’m not being stupid right?

I mean how big a difference can their engineering schools have? A little here a little there.

If money wasn’t the deciding factor, I probably would have went to Duke instead of my school, NCSU. We have the better engineering program, but the connections you build at a school like that are powerful on their own if you do it right… Lots of opportunities. Since it is your cheapest option…yeah, I would have to take it.

Hi Nasim,
I guess you are an Arab from your name (I am) and we are in a very similar position but you have YALE!!!
I was given the renaissance scholarship at Rochester and Also given a great financial aid package at Tufts and I am currently choosing between them. Just wanted to see where you will go. I am also going to major in chemical engineering.
Congratulations and I wish you all the luck!

Actually I’m Iranian. But yeah, I get why you would assume that. (Though I’m a girl! Arabs assume Nasim is a boys name. :P)

I picked Yale. Though I really really loved Rochester too. I got the renaissance as well and they said they will help with other financial stuff. But in the end, who can resist Yale?

Sorry I’m replying late. Hope you are ecstatic with your decision.
Tufts was also another dream school for me. (But they rejected me too. I really don’t understand how this process works anymore. But I think it was the fault of my interviewer. Tufts interview was the worst I had cuz he didn’t know what to ask at all and I tried to just talk about myself with no cues from him. And still we barely talked for 15 minutes. Dunno what was up with that… :(((
