I've heard UofR is really good for engineering; I'm a prospective applicant for 2010 (as in next year), interested in chemical engineering. Does anyone know if it really is strong in engineering and if anyone plans on doing the 3-2 engineering thing. I think it sounds interesting and was interested if anyone knows anything specific about it. (stuff not on the website, which isn't very informative)

Um in not so sure about the engineering program. I'm sure it's good like most things at Rochester, but Rochester is really known for its world-class economics, poly sci, medical, and musical depts. I can tell you from my father's experience that when he got an Organic Chem PhD in '88 Rochester was ranked second in the US, behind Harvard in Organic Chem. Basically, the science department, esp the Chem and physics, are pretty strong.

Well it depends on what kind of engineering you are doing...Biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, Optics are all very well known...I will try and see if ChemE is worth it here..

Overall though, I believe that if you do pursue your ChemE here, you will get a lot of good research oppurtunities that you may not be able to tap into as an undergrad elsewhere. For example, the Bausch and Lomb laboratories give out soooo manyyyyy internships from U of R. Also the strong memorial hospital you have close by, and there are a lot of Chemical Companies that are associated with it. I saw one when I visited and my friend said there were many more. Not to mention the school's lab which will have a wealth of oppurtunities for you along with grads and PhDs.

But here is another look :
My friend at UR gave me some good advice a while back and told me that if you were doing the above three engineering, you'd be crazy and dumb to not go to UR as it is one of the best in these fields...yet if you are doing another engineering you'd be dumb and crazy to go to UR if you had oppurtunities at polytechnic schools for example that specialize in the other engineering fields.

I will look for some good solid convincing evidence though and get back to you :)

I'm not really interested in the polytechnic schools- I want a school where it's not a "techie" feeling because I don't really fit that mold and I want to meet lots of different people, and I don't think I can get that experience at a polytechnic institute. I was looking at my fiske guide, and it told me URochester was one of the premier schools in engineering, and I've always been somewhat enamored with it anyways. Thanks a lot. :p

Yeah - then UR is probably just that -A lot of interest in Engineering/natural science, yet you have those other great programs in Polysci/Econ/etc , so when it all comes together, everyone is coooL! haha

Of the three students I know well from UR, two of them are in engineering. It's a popular program, but that's about all I can tell you, I'd suggest talking to any teachers you have now that are familiar with the area about it.
