So I'm a senior in high school right now and am considering majoring in Chemical Engineering, the only problem being that I only took a minimal amount of chemistry while in high school. I only took a4 week summer course of regular chemistry the summer going into my junior year and it was incredibly easy, I was basically teaching all the students that were in there who had failed chemistry on their first attempt, but then again, this was regular chemistry and it was almost 2 years ago, and a very brief taste of an entire subject. I have taken AP Physics (got an A both semesters as well as getting a 4 on the test, I am currently in AP Environmental Science (receiving an easy A last semester), AP Biology (also receiving a pretty easy A), am taking my 5th engineering class(Intro to Engineering Design, Principles of Eng, Digital Electronics, Comp Integrated Manufacturing, and am now taking Civil Eng & Architecture), and I love math, and am good at it too. I was just looking for advice to whether I would be able to pick up the chemistry required for this major, if Ican handle this major in general.

Okay, you know I have to ask… why the interest in Chemical Engineering as a major when you’ve experienced so little of it in school?

I guess I don’t really have an answer to your question, but this is the best I can offer. My daughters are sophomores in AP Chem right now. One of them loves it so much that she thinks she wants to major in it (although in our research, it sounds like MatSci is more her thing). She looked at your list of courses and says if you’re succeeding in them, you should be fine… especially if you like math because they do quite a bit of math.

Know that there will certainly be freshmen at your college who have had AP Chem already so you might feel a little behind in the beginning, but eventually you’ll all be on the same playing field. And hopefully, your school will allow you to sample the subject before declaring it as a major.

Good luck! =)

I have become interested in chemical engineering because of the vast career opportunities open chemical engineering major. I really want to do something to improve the quality of the environment and chem engineers seem to work directly with that. I regret not taking AP Chem but I’m hoping I can pick it up like all the other sciences.
Thanks for your input too!

At my school we have freshman chemistry classes which are basically gen chem I and II but for chemical engineers, chemistry majors, etc. these go into quite a bit more depth than the regular gen chem class does.

In high school, I only took one year of chem and it was a very very very basic chem class. It was ridiculously easy. I can definitely see how taking AP chem would have helped but it’s not necessary. I just have to work a bit harder than the kids who have taken AP chem

Okay thanks, you’re a chemical engineering major right?
& I’m going to attend UC Davis this fall, which isn’t ranked particularly high in chemical engineering, will this disadvantage me in some way?

You won’t be disadvantaged as long as the school is accredited.

so true, and if you approve yourself after getting the first job ,you will be able to work anywhere you want.

If I approve myself?

Hahaha Lol ,sorry
I meant “prove”.
I wrote that when I was dying due to the less of sleep.
