would i be able to persue a career in chemical engineering? or am i too stupid?

I'm a senior at my highschool and im very interested in presueing a career in chemical engineering. Before last year I always never payed very much attention in my classes and got by with Cs and Bs. Then I got into a chemistry class and really enjoyed it and got an A in it while all of the other students hated it and even some really smart students got a B in it. My chemistry teacher recommended I become a chemical engineer. And since then I've had all As in my classes. But last year on my a.c.t. I only got a 19 :(. My iq is 121 tho so I don't think I'm too stupid but idk. Is this a realistic job for me or do you think I would not be able to do it? Also, I've done a lotta research on chemical engineers and I think I would enjoy being one.

Definitely not too stupid, stop being silly lol

You most certainly could do it. If you have the drive and always keep your eye on the prize, you will succeed at becoming one. Your high school experience reminds me of my own (which was a long time ago). I slacked off until junior and senior year when I actually started to apply myself. I too got a 19 on my ACT.

Jump to the present, I’m now a sophomore at my local CC, attending part-time at night, with a 3.8 gpa. Just like you, I really enjoy chemistry (I’m taking Chem 2 at the moment) and I’m considering going into ChemE.

Now with your stats, you should enroll at your local CC after graduation and knock out the first two years of your engineering degree. Then transfer to a university/engineering school. This way, not only will you save money, you will be able to prove yourself to the prospective university. Like I said before, if you have the drive, you will succeed.

Good luck!

Hmmm where did you get your IQ score from?

Anyway. I think interest is important. Why don’t you apply to an engineering school, and try chemE for maybe one or two semesters? Explore the ChemE world while in college - attend club fairs, speak to upperclassmen to find out more.

If you took an IQ test off the internet, most likely it’s not reliable.

This is an interesting chart:
[The Reference Frame: IQ in different fields](http://motls.blogspot.com/2006/03/iq-in-different-fields.html)

Both illegalsmile and jwxie made great points. Interest is very important when deciding what career/education path to take. Since you seem to like Chemistry take a few courses related to ChemE at a local CC as illegalSmile suggested. It’s not only a great way to test the waters without wasting money but it could also help you advance to your prospective university if you did poor in high school. If you love what you are doing and have a good work ethic you should be good.

If you think you’re too stupid because of an IQ test, you’re too stupid. Otherwise, yes, you can certainly do it. Heck i suck at maths and I’m going to start EE next year.

LOL exactly, that’s my point. Not being a meanie. But IQ 121 meaning you are above the average, and that you should somehow get a great score. Those IQ tests are not reliable. :)

I got my iq test in kindergarden(they used to do it at the school I went to) and iq doesn’t matter with age. I was also supposed to be very good with math classes and always tested advanced in all the tcap in highschool. Then I got lazy in highschool and never did homework or studied :(. My gpa is 3.1 but now my senior year I’ve been doing a lot better. I have have all As so far and I’m in precal, english 4, and I have a 99 in chem 2. But I’m just afraid that my mistakes of being lazy in the past could cost me a job id like to do :(. Also, I’ve been studying for the a.c.t. with the book the a.c.t. people sell with all the practice test and on the science I’ve been getting 25 and26 and same with math. English is still low and only a 20 and reading is 22 but I won’t know for sure until the real a.c.t. Thanks to all you people saying I can do it  and all the advice on what to do after highschool.

You failed to realize what was being said and seem to just be throwing numbers around. Do more research on the subject and decide for yourself. Basing your future solely on tests and loose suggestions could be costly down the road. Good luck.

Okay thanks :). I’ve been trying to reasearch it quite a while but I can’t find any sites that help me to much. Any ideas?

I’m not trying to preach against going into this profession or anything but here’s a post I posted before about Chemical Engineering’s declining job market. It might worth taking a look.

Have you tried taking the SAT instead? They are different types of tests geared towards different types of people.
