I want to pursue one of the subfields of chemical engineering, and don't really want to work in a petrochem plant. I've heard that ChemE is pretty broad so I thought this was possible, but from the general feel of responses I've gotten on these forums, and job concentration info from the BoL, it seems that most ChemE are going to work in a plant in a small town in Louisiana/texas etc.

To put it briefly, is it smart to go into a ChemE major (getting a masters mind you), and not want to work in a petrochem plant or a small never-anything-to-do-oh-god-someone-kill-me shantytown?
