Chemical or Mechanical Engineering

I applied as a junior year transfer student to North Carolina State University and University of North Carolina at Charlotte for their Mechanical Engineering program as a first choice and Chemical Engineering as a second. My problem is I got accepted at both schools, but for different majors. I got accepted to UNCC into their Mechanical Engineering program and NCSU into their Chemical Engineering program. I am torn between the two. Obviously I enjoy both major materials very much. I think my biggest concern would be what school is going to provide the most hands on and in depth education for either major. I am also torn between which major to go with, I know that ChemE make a bit higher salary than mechanical, but I also contemplate the wide field I can go into with MechE. I would like to focus on energy or oil and petroleum, so either major makes sense. The salary is not a huge deal I just want something that I will enjoy doing.

I have also heard many horror stories coming out of NCSU's chemistry department that worries me a bit. Any stories from either University would be greatly appreciated. I feel that UNCC will be more personable and have smaller classes than NCSU, But that NCSU carries more weight on a resume.

Thanks for all the help in advance!

unbiasedly, mechanical engineering is more versatile than chemical and will open more doors. i believe for this reason it is a better choice from a careers perspective.
