I am very sure that I want to major with some combination of chemistry and writing. However, I’m not very sure how exactly I want to go about this. Considering: Double major in chem and English or journalism, major in chem and minor in one of those two, major in Chem-E and minor in one of those two? I’m not quite sure of career goals (who really is?), but I would, right now, ideally want to spend some time in research, some time editing/writing for a scientific journal or magazine, and then maybe become a teacher or professor eventually. Which of these do you think would suit me best’be most feasible or sensible?
That’s actually an interesting combination to begin with. but I wonder why would you like to take chem while it feels like it is writing that you really want?
Chem major + English major/minor----do-able
Chem major + Journalism major/minor----might be somewhat less do-able since journalism assignments might be time consuming alongside a chem major and a journalism program might be in a different academic unit, so it might depend on the particular school you choose (some universities make it easier than others to take courses or majors across their constituent academic units).
Chem E major + English or Journalism major/minor—workload for engineering major might make this difficult and English and journalism programs will be in different academic units than engineering, so it might depend on the particular school you choose. Also, an engineering degree often allows fewer electives outside the engineering program.
Depending on the school you choose, if you major in chemistry, you might need to consider whether to pursue a BA or BS option. Many schools offer both in their Chemistry departments. The BS option often is offered for students who intend to go to grad school in Chemistry or a related field, whereas the BA option allows more room for electives outside the major and is easier to combine with another major or minor.
For the types of writing you mentioned, other majors/minors to consider are Professional Writing or Technical Writing.
Within an English major, the usual focus will be on literature, you could also do a track in creative writing (creative nonfiction). A lot depends on the types of writing that most interest you.
Other liberal arts majors or minors that might combine well with Chemistry and lend themselves to certain types of writing careers (sometimes after a master’s in science journalism) include history of science or environmental studies.
If you choose a landgrant public university, another option is a program in science/environmental communication, which might be found in some ag schools in depts. that previously had a more narrow focus on ag journalism. Again, it depends on the type of writing that interests you.
