My son has been accepted to Cornell and is considering a Chemistry major there. I would appreciate the comments/opinions of any current or former students familiar with the program.

As an aside he is comparing it to Penn (and its Vagelos Scholar Program) and Northwestern (and its ISP).

Cannot comment on Penn or Northwestern, but Freshman D is pursuing dual chemistry/biology major at Cornell. She has found the honors general chemistry very challenging and rewarding. Her advisor could not be better and has been very supportive of her efforts to find research opportunities as a freshman.

I was accepted to Cornell and I also plan on pursuing a degree in chemistry. I had concerns about the availability of the professors and am pleased to hear that they are “supportive.” I am even more excited about getting started.

I am a freshman and am also looking to pursue a dual Biology/Chemistry degree. I must say that i rather enjoy the chemistry program here at Cornell. The support staff is pretty solid and our professor this semester is very entertaining.

The chemistry program at Cornell is generally regarded as one of the gems on campus. I had two close friends who were chemistry majors who went on to get PhDs at Berkeley and Harvard and they still rave about the environment at Cornell. They are also building a brand new building to house the physical sciences on campus.

I can’t comment on the programs at Northwestern or Penn except to say that they sound interesting.

wow, what makes biology so asterisky? I have never really encountered such negativity about it, even though I know chemistry is great. is it the advisor people or the classes themselves?

my experiences with the chem dept. but I have always been happy with it. the professors I’ve dealt with have been fair, and I have learned plenty.
