Chemistry at MIT?

Hello all,

I am considering going to MIT for Chemistry among other top STEM/technology schools across the nation. I am looking for more information regarding the strengths and weaknesses for MIT’s system.

How are the classes/courses at MIT for chemistry in terms of rigor, who teaches them (professors? any distinguished/prestigious chemistry faculty/teachers? what percentage of courses are taught by professors vs. grad students, etc.), the potential to advance past freshman General Chem? Is there a somewhat clear path for specific majors in Chemistry or is there pick-and-choose instead of a “core” pathway?

How is the strength of the Chemistry department compared to that of Caltech/other schools’ chem departments and vs. other departments in MIT? Like, in relation to the engineering at MIT?

What about internships, summer work, opportunities to work in the lab? I’m especially interested about UROP (Undergrad. Research Opp. Program) and would love if a current undergrad in it could give some feedback regarding the program.

Any professional chemistry societies/organizations?

Should I consider Chemistry as a major or a minor? How would premed work?

I’d like to hear some input from students who have or are currently studying Chemistry at MIT – any feedback on why they chose MIT for chemistry, any regrets, any mistakes, or any insider tidbits that could help me in deciding. I’ve already spent a lot of time on the Dept. of Chem MIT website, but I’d like to know more from actual students.

Thank you!

Any insight? Slight bump.
