mit's chemistry

like all other departments, this department must be hella hard but i was just wondering how mit chemistry is

is it popular?

what's a good frehsman class

and what is this solid-state chemistry thing.. that's not really a class is it
is it like INTRO INTRO chem for non-majors?

i was hoping to see strong ORGANIC but i heard no ap credit and stuff.. so i'm confused..

so everyone just either takes this solid-state thingy or NORMAL general chem?

There are three choices for freshman chemistry: 5.111, 5.112, or 3.091.

5.111 and 5.112 are both listed as "Principles of Chemical Science." I don't know all that much about the differences between these two since I didn't take either of them. 5.111 is supposed to be for students with only 1 year of chemistry, and 5.112 is supposed to be for students with 2 years. More similarities and differences can be seen at http://web.mit.edu/chemistry/www/academic/differences.html

The other choice is 3.091 "Introduction to Solid State Chemistry." This is the class that I took last term. It's taught by Prof. Sadoway in the fall, and he is a fairly good lecturer. It's supposed to focus more on the solid state in chemistry (as can be seen in the course title), and is generally viewed as the easiest chemistry class (or at least I was told that it was very easy by upper-classmen). A passing grade is a 50, and yet, I still barely passed with a C (I hate chemistry!). This is why Pass/No Record is such a great system!

Anyway, yeah, 5.111/2 seem to be for people that are planning to major in course 5 or something related to chemistry, while 3.091 seems to be the class to take if you don't particularly care for chemistry (like me).

Chemistry isn't a huge department -- about 25 students per year plus a few double majors -- but many non-majors take chemistry classes for majors in chemE, biology, BCS, or BE.

You can take the Advanced Standing Exam in chemistry if you feel very well-prepared by your high school classes. If you pass this exam, you get credit for intro chem (5.111) and can move straight to 5.12 (organic) if you choose.

And, ahem. Just because it's quote normal unquote general chem doesn't mean it's easy...

PS -- Hi Kjell!

while i was there, the general atmosphere seemed to be that Chem E was more popular... chemistry seemed to be less demanding on its requirements?

yea im considering coure 5 or 10 too! =]
