Chemistry at Vassar?

I am a senior applying to Vassar this year and socially I know that Vassar is a perfect fit for me. I am probably going to double major or major/minor in chemistry and theatre (odd combo I know). I know that Vassar has a stellar theatre department, no questions there. But what of chemistry? I have done some research and on paper it looks like an excellent department but I would love to hear what some student/parents of students think of the program. I'm looking for a small, intimate department where I will get a great education and lots of hands-on lab time and one-on-one interaction with professors. Thoughts? Thanks :)

You’ll definitely get a lot of attention from the professors!! Labs…oh yes…those come with every chem class. think 4 hour long sessions. But my professor in particular wants to meet with us and we’ve all had appointed sessions with him discussing our research papers. It’s great. Chemistry is small on campus only because students who attend Vassar tend to be more geared towards humanities subjects (same thing for math I think), but our Chem department is amazing and fun…free ice cream every fridays.mmmmmm

The chem department is great! they are a really fun group. I don’t think chem is a smaller program because of the make-up of the Vassar student body. Bio is one of the top 5 majors at the college. Chemistry tends to be a less popular science major overall in colleges - most students, for whatever reason, tend to like bio, or if chemistry inclined, biochem. But the department itself is great! Your description of what you want in a department is definitely of a small liberal arts college. Make sure you look into the URSI program as well and the kind of projects students do.

And theater + chem is not a weird combo for vassar students at all!

Hey, I am interested in the chemistry department! Is the major hard? A lot of work? Tough professors? I want to learn, but I also want a good GPA ;)

Did you go to Vassar? If so how do you feel about the chem program?

In looking at her other posts, it appears she went to Lewis & Clark College…at least she posted a lot about that one.
