Chemistry Courses?

So I’m a little bored and I decided to try to figure out my courses. I just found out I got a 5 on the AP chem test, so where does that put me? I thought usually when you get a 5 on the AP you are placed in organic (Chem 35) but do I have to take Chem 33 before that?

Yes, all students at Brown must start at 33. The chem AP basically accounts for nothing at Brown, which is unfortunate, because depending on the quality of your AP class and which section of Chem 33 you choose, you will have covered as much as 70-90% of the material before. Sometimes it's harder in 33, but the same material.

I was looking at the course description and I have covered most of that, is there any way to place out of Chem 33 and go to 35?

You already got your AP scores back? Did you call or did they just come in the mail?

I called, it cost $8 bucks.

There is no way to test out, js. That's just the way it is at Brown, sorry. It's the one course that I'd say Brown is pretty dumb about, but that doesn't look to be changing soon. In fact, they'd like to reform the course completely so that there is less overlap but are not looking to get rid of it. They've found that students coming in even with strong AP courses are not prepared to skip, that's what I've been told from chem professors (I am a chem concentrator).

So yeah, they're looking to change the course and make it less like AP and make it more useful to students, but they're not looking to let anyone skip a semester of Gen. Chem before orgo.

Orgo isn't offered until the Spring anyway.

My suggestion-- if you have a strong background take the class with Moulton. You may have known a lot of the material before hand, but he will certainly challenge the hell out of you. His problem sets and tests will be entertaining and challenging, whereas Rose-Petruck's will be ridiculous and require almost no effort on your part.

heh, RP's class was terrible-I don't think I went to class a single day after the second month. fortunately orgo has much much better teachers
