Chemistry major

Can any current or past chemistry majors give their opinions on the chemistry major at W & M. Quality/prestige of program in comparison to other schools. Job opportunities/graduated school/medical school, etc.

Thanks

I’ll leave some of the specifics to current students and alumni but I can answer some of your questions more generally.

About 1/3 of W&M students go to graduate school immediately following their undergraduate work and 60% go within five years. W&M students are generally accepted to graduate programs at very high rates. For medical school speficially, our alumni gain admission at rates 15-20% higher than the national average.

W&M has a pre-med advisory program that works with any interested student and helps them be the most competitive applicant for medical school they can be and also helps them navigate that application process. You can learn more at [William & Mary - Pre-Med, Pre-Vet, Pre-Dentist, and Pre-Pharmacy Program](http://www.wm.edu/as/undergraduate/advising/preprofessional/premed/index.php)

Undergraduate research is highly emphasized at W&M and the Chemistry Department is no exception. You can learn more about those opportunities here [William & Mary - Research](Research | William & Mary)

I am not a science person… but I can tell you that the science programs at W&M are very highly regarded. The medical school placement is excellent. W&M grads of all types to very well with graduate school placement and employment. One of the best parts about W&M is that if you want, you will get the chance to do undergraduate research. This allows you to build your resume for graduate school in a way that many other schools do not offer.

Another big benefit is that all your classes should be taught by professors, with the only exception being that older students monitor lab sessions in lower level classes.
