Chemistry Olympiad 2013!

i think it should be fine now but i’m not 100% sure. the coordinator of the ny section was like if you’re gonna discuss tomorrow, discuss later in the day

Well on the west coast, it’s 2 o’clock, so people may still be taking the Lab portion. How about we wait until it’s like 5 or 6 o’clock on the west coast when I don’t think anybody will be doing it

The labs weren’t terrible. Only two problems on the FRQ were lame. The MC was surprisingly more qualitative than quantitative. I really hated the organic questions and problems 1-15.

Yeah I’m expecting about 3 problems on the MC to have stumped many, and lower the average camp by at least 1-2 MC

agree there were some newer tricky MC, but FR i thought was easier than last year’s, except for one part…which i think we can all recall which one…

Are you referring to the 6th FR with that NEW TOPIC they’ve never asked about before?

@Harvey, do you think
54/60
84-86% on FR (Depending on how they give me points)
Average on lab

= camp?
Recall that this year’s MC was harder than before

For some reason my group took the lab second and it was really hard to me. For those of you that took it, I’m sure you know which one was the harder of the two. My experiment flat out did not work and I ran out of time. I was so demoralized (anf frustrated with the terrible calculators they gave us) that I probably left 30% of the FR unanswered and answered 10% with dubious veracity. Ugh

MC was rather easy though aside from the total surprises.

yes…that is the question…good grief it came out of nowhere…maybe they give a few pity points for my answer lolol…

I’m hoping what you said would make camp, my scores are probably around that…

i think a lot of the MC was pretty easy, but there were 5-10 newer/tricky ones or at least a handful I wasn’t 100% sure of (got half them right i think), so hopefully they wont be extremely high cutoffs…

off topic, but anybody goin to science bowl in a couple weeks?

I didn’t even know enough to BS an answer so I left it blank. ***
On the MC, I know I got 5 wrong and I’m debating about a 6th, but I think that’s it
On the FR, I got one of the reactions on #5 wrong (just the products). That’s like -1% on FR. Then I got that annoying new topic all wrong, so probably -4% there, as well as I think -3% on the part A of that question. And then I didn’t get anything right on the second part of #7 (draw a graph, explain), which is probably like -4%. So 100-1-4-3-4 = 88%, assuming everything else is right.
And okay on the lab

as a rough guide:
top 150: 43-44 points on part I only
top 50:: 80% correct on part I and 75% correct on part II
top 20: 90% correct on part I and part II

i got pretty much all #1-5 and 7-8, maybe half of #6
but i screwed up completely on one of the reactions and had only one page for the organic problem… so im guessing anywhere from 80-90% generously haha

-3 for sure on MC (1 stupid stupid stupid), probably another 2-3 wrong as well

hmm hopefully it’s less than 90%…and on that note i shall leave this thread…i dont wanna be sucked into discussion for the next week hahaha

The organic problem was extremely easy. But I forgot everything that #7 asked. #1 was a very tricky one as well. Number 6 I actually got because I studied what it covered the night before.

rule #1: “never study the night before” :)

Seeing how a lot of you guys are saying that you only got around 3 to 7 questions wrong on the MC is making it hard for me to believe the cutoff line for 150 is going to be around 43 or 44 lol or is it just that CCers are the top scorers? XP

Yay, my first post on College Confidential!

I didn’t get to do much studying. I only looked at a few past exams. I answered about 70% of the free response, but probably got 50% correct at best. MC was OK, I guess. I messed up on the first lab, but the second lab wasn’t too bad.

Ha ha, my thoughts exactly!

haha don’t worry justin5585, i’m at ~9-10. CCers are the cream of the crop XD

@HarveyMudd
I’ll be at scibowl nats too, if you haven’t stopped checking this thread :P

And yes #6 was a big dupe… Hopefully those two parts don’t count for much. I mixed up the answers for the two parts, as in my explanation for the first applied to the second and vice versa, so I hope the give me partial cred, though I doubt it -_- #1 was also ridiculously intensive this year compared to the last few years, so I skipped it and came back to the end but ran out of time on part (g). I got High Honors last year, but seeing how this test went for me I’m expecting the same thing again - ~56 MC, 80%-90% on the FRQ, and at not completely bombing the labs. I’m certain I got the last part of the second lab correct however, as I vaguely remember seeing a video of it on the web last year (wikipedia ftw :D)

Do you guys think that the presence of questions on those “new” topics would depress the camp cutoff score this year? Or are there at least 20 people who knew how to do them and ace everything else…

@rambo, depress the scores yes, by probably 1-2 mc and 3-5% FR.

Your stats are fine for making camp, dont worry

since i assume it’s safe to compare answers now, anyone wanna PM me and compare letter answers/go over questions we disagree on?
