Chemistry Olympiad 2014

@persondontexist Yep LA cutoff was actually 53 and those who got 52’s had to have a runoff. There was a cutoff for first place with high score of 59 (two guys both from Walnut High School).

I got a 58 and am moving on to nationals though! What’s the best way to make top 20? (or top 50 at least)

For people familiar with the official USNCO rules, how lenient are they in section 2 as far as significant figures? They are rounding after each step (grrr) and I always seem to be off by .01-.03, etc.

Did any one hear from Santa Clara Vallley region? I thought I should be qualified but I haven’t received any emails yet.

Quick question, does qualifying for the National Exam count for anything on college apps? Like “Qualified for National Chemistry Olympiad 2014”? I qualified from my school but I’m not sure I’ll have the time to actually study for a high placing at Nats

@jiggla technically it makes you a “US National Chemistry Olympiad Finalist” - go to the local ACS banquet (if they have one) and you will probably get a certificate that says so. Qualifying for the USNCO isn’t as prestigious as USAMO or USAPhO but it’s still a relatively big deal.

Gaaaaah I still don’t know what I got, only that it was above 50 and that I advanced. I want to get dat 60 doe

Also, I wouldn’t take an organic chemistry class solely to help for the USNCO, You can just read an organic chemistry textbook if you want to get all the information. I’d take the class anyway because I think organic chemistry is cool, but if you’re just preparing for the USNCO an orgo class would probably be overkill

anyone knows where the answers are? on the site it says it’ll be available today…

Question for everyone: I have just read on an informational ppt about USNCO that the section II and section III of those who don’t make top 150 in the multiple choice aren’t even graded; this I guess effectively means that top 150 is determined by MC while section II and III are only used for further selection for camp. Thoughts and/or more information?

Yeah that’s the way it is

Can anyone who previously made camp comment on what are the ballpark scores they were getting when they took the test?

@albert29 Can’t say for the other sections, but the average score for camp qualifiers one year was 55. The general consensus seems to be 80-90+ for Part II and average or better for part III.

Part III is a killer. You just have to hope that you’ve done it before or that things just click on test day

Has anyone heard from the San Gorgonio section?

Does anyone know what sort of multiple choice score is necessary to make top 150? I got a 52 on the local exam and have been getting mostly high 40s on national ones.

Just wanted to say good luck to everyone taking it in couple of days.

Just got out of the national one. Don’t worry, you guys are good, wasn’t too bad at all. Only a couple surprises

Took the national on Thursday: I would say easier than 2013/2012 in general, but defininately a couple surprises like Pixelations said. Good luck!

As a side note, does anyone know past cutoffs and estimated cutoffs for this years top 150?

Great question, God. Great username, too.

Has anyone heard about top 20 yet?

Are the calls for selection for the camp supposed to be around now? (The website says that the Top 150 is announced on the 15th)
