@Remembrance

Basically, all I did was read through the entire book pretty much. However, I did skim through many of the sections which I already knew about so yeaa… It really doesn’t take that long if you already have a pretty good background in chem.

@Sophia

So you think if I brush up on general chem. and study those topics in orgo, I should be able to make High Honors in USNCO?

Does anyone know how I can individually register for the local exam?
My school isnt participating.
I sent the local coordinator an email 8 days ago, but he hasnt replied yet.

Send him another email. I’m 99% sure you have to register through whoever runs your region. You are running out of time to order tests…

Also, what date is locals? On the website, it says its between 3/1 and 3/31, but I wanna know the exact date. Anyone know?

I’m pretty sure there is no exact date… hence the range

@huehuehue32

The deadline for signing up is still like a month away.

I’m just aiming for nationals top 50 this year. SATs, writing comps, and other summer prog apps have stolen precious time away from studying chemistry.

@TheAnomalist , How do you plan on going about preparing to achieve your goal of top 50, just wondering?

I’ve been doing (a lot) problems directly out of Zumdahl (and marking the ones I got wrong). I plan on doing the practice tests around around mid Feb and early March. As suggested by Sophia, I am preparing for the orgo with Kleins.

@TheAnomalist: Well said, I had the same problem too. Now with mid terms coming up I wont start till next week. Do you think a month and a half should do for all the practice tests?

^I think a month and a half sufficient enough, but remember, it’s about the quality, not the quantity. You do not have to do ALL the practice tests. In fact, it will be to your advantage if you do only some of the practice tests BUT go through your mistakes and review your weaknesses. Rushing through all the tests in an attempt to shove them all in one set time period without taking the time to review them is complete suicide.

Do any of you guys know the approximate cutoff for the US National Chemistry Olympiad?

I would be interested in knowing the answer to this question above as well. How much would it take to make top 150 and top 50 ?

And is there a way to check what the local exam cutoff has been in the past for your area?

To qualify for the USNCO in my area you historically have needed to score in the mid 40’s out of 60. In some other areas you may need to be in the high 50’s. You can ask your local director about the cutoff, they may not be supposed to tell you but mine did, lol

Some poster last year was of the opinion that getting in the fifties on the MC ONLY of the USNCO was enough for top 150, though I’d assume that top 50 would require a good job on every part of the USNCO. Personally I found the FRQ to be killer. They are not unanswerable, but they take a long time - longer than you’d think. I never did timed practice with them while preparing, which was probably my number one mistake in the whole process (along with just not knowing more stuff:)).

Really?!?! Just getting in the 50s in the MC part of the USNCO is enough for top 150?!?!?!

Does anyone have more info on this ? ^^

That almost seems to good to be true. I did a timed USNCO MC portion with another personal who was preparing for Olympiad and together we got over 50 correct (and we’re not like super pro or anything). :(|)

Yea, I also highly doubt thats true…

Hi, I’m a sophomore taking Honors Chemistry, and I have one month to prepare for the local exam. We’re only half way through the course, and I can’t answer most of the questions in the local exam tests. I won’t have trouble learning difficult concepts, but time is my main concern. I only have a month to prepare, and my teacher recommends an SAT Chem book, but I’m not sure if that has enough info… What book should I get to prepare??? Please help!!! :(
