Chicago visit help

Everyone was so helpful during out NYC trip we were looking for some help with our Chicago visit . We are looking to stay somewhere in between Columbia College/Roosevelt area and Loyola Chicago . Any recommendations? Thank you

Every part of Chicago where you want to stay and on the suburban lakefront is ultra expensive to stay in. If you want cheaper, stay in the suburbs outside this area.

Are you wanting to stay in between those two because you are touring both? If so, somewhere around Wrigley would be midway. But if you are just thinking convenience-wise, I’d stay in downtown and take an Uber or drive to Loyola. Everything else you will want to do is downtown - and I recommend the Hyatt Regency on Wacker.

Loyola’s main campus is right off an El stop. Take it up there from downtown. If your child wants to know how living in Chicago is like, she/he needs to get used to riding it.

If your target is Loyola, do note there are some iffy areas north of the campus in Rogers Park and south in Uptown. The area around Loyola itself is fine.

Do you have a car? Is your intention to tour the city or just get to know the campus? Budget?

Thank you everyone. We are scheduled to visit Columbia , Roosevelt and Loyola. We are still deciding if we need a car or if Uber and public transportation is sufficient . We will be taking the train into Chicago .

The train and Uber will be sufficient and easier to get around on. That would be my recommendation. Have done it many times with two children in Chicago.

@dramamama3 - is your D looking at doing Unifieds next year? Staying in the south loop close to Palmer House will help you feel on top of things next year if so! We didn’t do Chicago Unifieds but we’ve visited Chicago a lot over the last 5 years and I love it. Agree that you can take the subways and uber anywhere. Good call on the train in from the airport - it’s the way to go.

In the loop (Theatre District) I generally got hotels from Priceline. I have stayed in Palmer House, the Hampton Inn (Majestic Theater), Swissotel, the Wit and the Cambria and had no complaints at any - you can walk to everything and subway access was great. South loop close to the park will also put you in a short walk of CCPA and Columbia. If you find a great deal in the area just N of the river (Hilton Garden Inn, etc) that’s just a bit more walking but it gets you closer to Eataly.

We recently stayed at the Hyatt Regency in the Loop, it was reasonable, allowed us to walk everywhere and use CTA.

If you’re on a budget (& don’t mind sharing) you might want to look at HI Chicago hostel. It’s right around the corner from Roosevelt & across the street from Columbia and very reasonable. I haven’t stayed there – but I spoke to a mom during Chicago Unifieds who did and they were happy with it.

We have stayed at the Travelodge downtown – 65 E. Harrison. We have stayed there twice. I can’t remember the cost, but it fit our budget. The rooms were very nice. It is in within walking distance of Roosevelt and Columbia. You can ride the EL to Loyola. We also took the train into Chicago. We did not need a car.

Thanks everyone. We are planning an August family trip to Chicago so thought we would tour some schools when we are there. Loyola and Columbia are two of her “safety” schools.

Thank you for all the Chicago tips. We had an amazing trip to Chicago.
