Chicago, you, and location.

Hey guys, I finally decided to attend Chicago. I was just wondering, where are all you wonderful people are from? I am from So Cal myself. I read a couple books on The University of Chicago and I thought that it might be interesting if I shared with you guys some of the things I read about it:

The girls here are not very pretty

Boyfriend/girlfriend relationships are not prevalent

Nearly pure academics

No school spirit (it says that the students "dis" the school a lot but inside, they love the school to death)

Not very well known but well known to business majors, economic majors, etc...

A place where you can be proud to be a nerd

One book mentions that a group of students made a nuclear reactor; one of the students said something along the lines of "I am no afraid of how many nuclear reactors there are, but of how many students can make them."

Anyway, I read these from books and no, I am not insulting the school. It is a great school! That is why I am going there! I just read these and thought they were pretty funny and odd. Good luck and see you guys in the fall!

Congratulations on your decision. Light_Cow. Pennsylvania here.

"The girls here are not very pretty"

Indeed.

"Boyfriend/girlfriend relationships are not prevalent"

I recall reading or hearing the statistic that fifty percent of undergrads end up marrying another Chicago student.

"Nearly pure academics"

Can't argue that.

"No school spirit"

Nor that.

"Not very well known but well known to business majors, economic majors, etc..."

Only

No school spirit! Haven't you heard the school cheer?

Themistocles, Thucydides, The Peloponnesian Wars
X-squared, Y-squared, H2SO4
Who for, what for,
Who the hell are we cheering for?
Goooooo Maroons!

It's just Chicago-style school spirit... :)

Isn't the deadline 5/1 to decide?

PS. wow, I heard of that tucker guy. he graduated in three years with honors from uofc? did any of you read some of the things he wrote? this dude is the biggest human waste.

Hehehehe. I have no clue j10cpc5000. I got of their waitlist about 6 days ago.

Girls arn't very attractive:

Sigh, I wish this myth would stop propagating itself. We are no Stanford - no UCLA that is true, but we certainly are not a collection of ogres either.

Boyfriend/Girlfriend relationships not prevalent:

Odd..the majority of all my friends are either in committed relationships or are the type who'd rather...shall we say...prefer quantitiy over quality.

Nearly purely academics:

We have strong academics, but that doesn't mean we don't know how to have fun. See my post in the U Chicago forum at the end of the "A bunch of nerds.." thread for more info.

No school spirit:

Heh. Well we don't have a Badger nation, that's for sure. You won't find many U of Cers going to football games on their spare time (except the players...and the cheerleaders...yes, believe it or not, we actually do have cheerleaders). However, if the self-depricating nature of all of the shirts around campus is any indication, I'd say that there is quite a bit of school pride.

Proud to be a nerd:

Sure. Almost everyone here is a nerd - in their own unique way, mind you. We do not fit the stereotypes of nerdom in most cases.

Not very well known:

That depends. It depends on who you want to be well known to. I've found that your average joe often confuses the U of C with UIC (Univ. of Illinois' circle campus)...which can be frustrating at times. However, the types of people that actually matter - that would actually care about a good education / a good school, DO know about this school.

Oh, and the nuclear reactor was constructed in a student's dorm room for Scav Hunt one year. Note, it wasn't actually a nuclear reactor, they just managed to perform the technical process involved in a nuclear reactor. I'd like to see a Princeton student say they did that!

Also, I'd like to apologize in advance for any spelling or grammar mistakes I've made in this post...I sort of spent the night partying.

hey, what's up? I am from south korea. (I am actually studying in iowa though)

The girls here are not very pretty
yea, I suppose that they are not as pretty as girls in maybe stanford or UC

Boyfriend/girlfriend relationships are not prevalent
remember, uchicago is not a very big party school. but that doesn't mean boyfriend/girlfriend relationships are not prevalent. They do happen; and they tend to be more serious...what I mean by that is a lot less one night hook-ups like in other schools.

Nearly pure academics
yup yup. that's what uchicago is known for.

No school spirit (it says that the students "dis" the school a lot but inside, they love the school to death)
yep...no school spirit...but I still love u chicago.

Not very well known but well known to business majors, economic majors, etc...
the name of the school, u chicago is not gonna impress people as much as schools like harvard, stanford, yale, princton...but it won't matter. cuz you, the chicago people, will impress them with the skills you learned from uchicago.

A place where you can be proud to be a nerd
yup, I totally agree. being a nerd is not necessarilly a bad thing...be proud!

One book mentions that a group of students made a nuclear reactor; one of the students said something along the lines of "I am no afraid of how many nuclear reactors there are, but of how many students can make them."
yea, I read that too. It's...a little scary, but funny; and makes me like u chicago more and more. lolz

I hope to see you guys in the fall

"Not very well known but well known for business majors, economic majors, etc..."
Realize that UofC is one of the top Universities in the WORLD and that educated people throughout the WORLD will recognize UofC. Every single one of my teachers and school administrators know about UofC even though I am the first student ever to get accepted from my high school. Keep that in mind but also realize that it is pointless to be vain. Who cares if the guy who pumped your gas never heard of the school on your shirt (UofC of course).

How can there possibly be no school spirit? Aren't people there proud to be attend UC? I know if i get accepted, the minute i get that decision (shoudl it happen.. and god i hope it happens) i'm going to the website and buyign ALL th UC merchendise so i can show off!

everybody is happy as hell to go to uchicago, where did you get the idea that people have no school spirit?

from previous replies to this poster.

Woah. There is a difference between school spirit and happiness. Happiness is the fact that you are ecstatic to go there. Meaning something like you placed all your bets on Chicago and then got accepted, so you held a huge celebration that you got in.

School spirit on the other hand is like you "show off" to everyone else that you got accepted. And that you also attend the school games i.e. football, baseball, softball, etc also and, like Cornell, paint your faces red and yell at the top of your lungs.

I am proud that I did get into Chicago. However, books say that it is not really known for its school spirit. Meaning, you really do not find people who wear the University of Chicago sweaters or yell it at the top of their lungs in the city or such.

*No one at my school even wore a Chicago sweater. I love the fact that The University of Chicago is a very good school and yet, not too many people really and truely know about it and its true intelligence.

Oh and about this:

Themistocles, Thucydides, The Peloponnesian Wars
X-squared, Y-squared, H2SO4
Who for, what for,
Who the hell are we cheering for?
Goooooo Maroons!

Lol. I love it. :)

Go Chicago!

One of the things that attracted me to Chicago was that its students and alums speak of it so lovingly and with such respect, which is true school spirit to me...and I really wasn't interested in a rah-rah, sunshine, yay-us sort of school. Could care less about whether I join hands with people at football games and cheer. I'd much rather chant "C-H-Chicago! C-H-Chicago! C-H-Chicago! What is CH4? Methane!" Hehe.

Lol... Wow. That is so... funny. I am freaking serious. Lol. Yeah, I totally agree with you. ^_^

"Themistocles, Thucydides, The Peloponnesian Wars
X-squared, Y-squared, H2SO4
Who for, what for,
Who the hell are we cheering for?
Goooooo Maroons!"
-This is a myth. I have never even heard of it except when I read it in the Fiske college book. Sorry to disappoint, but no one actually cheers like this.

"remember, uchicago is not a very big party school. but that doesn't mean boyfriend/girlfriend relationships are not prevalent. They do happen; and they tend to be more serious...what I mean by that is a lot less one night hook-ups like in other schools."
-Chicago is all about the one night hook-up. At least for your first couple years.

Also, there really is no school spirit, but who cares. Your education is more important than how riled up people get about attending their school's sporting events.

Guys, I'm not a Chicagonian, but it really worries me when people from in an outside U of C say things like "that school isn't well known" Man, that's such a great Uni and it is prestigious and respected. And I also think that you guys have a greast school spirit becuae you have the great advantage of knowing that the quality of your school doesn't depend of being ivy or not ivy. As for nerdness, well, won't you say that applies for people in ivies too?

Very true. That cheer does not exist.

It is about hook-ups if you are in the good-looking clique. If not, you date.

No wonder you go to UofC. Not hard to figure out which house table you sit at...

Um, I read that cheer on the Uchicago website. It was being quoted by a member of one of the debate teams as the cheer they actually say.

"Not hard to figure out which house table you sit at..."
-Why? Which house table do I sit at? I don't believe it's where you think I lived.

In the early 1980's we said "the cheer" at Maroon football games. It has been around for some time.
