Child Development major?

Does anyone have any information about this major, and how competitive it is? I have a low GPA but pretty good SAT’s, work experience, and extra curriculars - and Cal Poly is my #1 choice.

Any help would be appreciated :)

What's your SAT score and how low is your GPA? And did your work experience tie in with your major? It's not that hard to get into, and if you applied ed, I believe it helps.

My GPA is a 3.0 and my SAT is an 1800, and all of my work experience and community service tie in with child development. Unfortunately, I did not apply ED.

just because you didn't apply early, doesn't mean you won't get in. sorry if i gave off that impression.

that's your SAT broken up? Cal Poly doesn't look at your writing so what's your score out of 1600 (m+v)?

The fact that your work experience relates to your major is very helpful. they really like that!

sorry.. i meant.. what's (not that's) your SAT score broken up? like without the writing.

My SAT without writing is 1160 (590 + 570), so hopefully my work experience will help me a lot!

your SAT is average, but your GPA is low. however, your work experience could help you out. how many hours of work and extra curricular activities did you have?

6- 10 for "Average number of hours worked per week"

Yes to more than 25% of my work being related to my major.

1-5 Hours per week in clubs/activites.

And "Yes" to holding leadership positions.

samantha08, did you get into Cal Poly? I saw your post on this and my dtr is also interested with pretty close to the same stats. Thanks!

@guitars101: No I did not. I went to community college for two years and reapplied again with a 3.3 gpa and was rejected once again. But I’m at UC Davis now studying human development.

hey samantha08 what were your stats when you applied from community college do you remember? did you have your General Education done? all cal poly’s child develpment classes? and how much work/community did you have? just wondering because i just applied from a CC as well for child development!

Had my daughter chosen to accept UC Davis’ offer of admission, she would have been in Human Development there. However, she went with Cal Poly (Kinesiology) instead. How do you like the major? She was thinking she might minor in Child Development at Poly. Her intention is to attend grad school and become an occupational therapist. Both of thse majors/minors would be beneficial. So would Human Development.

samantha08, Thanks for writing back. I’m sorry that you didnt’ get accepted, but I know that all works for good. You are meant to be at UC Davis and will do great things there. It’s a wonderful school, my daughter will be applying there also.

Best of luck in your studies and congratulations on your acceptance to UC Davis!

@guitars101: thank you! :)

@2leashes: I really like the major here so far. I’ve only been at Davis for a quarter, and I’m still doing pre-req and undergraduate classes this quarter, however next quarter I’m starting classes I’m really interested in. Human Development would be a great major/minor for an occupational therapist. The major is really broad so there’s a lot of different things you can do with it. I either want to go into elementary teaching or child psychology.

@surfbuff: When I applied to Cal Poly from CC, I had a 3.3 gpa and all the classes on assist.org completed, however I think they changed the requirements this year. all of my work experience and community service involved working with children. I’ve heard that state schools are harder to transfer to if you’re not from their “service area”, so if you’re not from Cuesta College or central CA, it’s harder for you to get in because people living in that area have priority. good luck with cal poly! :)

thanks samantha08 for the info. yeah i’m in the SAME EXACT BOAT, assist done, ge done, cal poly classes done, and the work stuff… i guess all i can do is hope…hope all is well @ davis.

not trying to be a dick, but work experience BARELY helps for cal poly admission. They have a computer system that just takes into account your GPA and SAT, and on a lesser note your class rigor. Your extra curriculars are only used as a tie breaker if you and another applicant have the same scores. I mean, they just have one little box with 3 options on extra curriculars. Uc’s care more about that stuff so you’ll have better luck there.

I heard that work experience is a plus in acceptance for SLO. Am I wrong?

^^^^^^^^^^if it directly applies to your major.

oh got it. thanks Socal70
