I am currently a senior in HS. I have studied 6 years of Mandarin Chinese and I am interested in pursuing a career with it. I don’t know whether in my college search I should look more towards business schools or schools with a chinese program. What matters more?
It depends on what kind of career that you want to pursue. If you are interested in for example being a translator or a professor of Chinese that requires a deep understanding of Chinese, you may want to look into Chinese major, say in Middleburry. In contrast, if you want to have a career say in international trade, commerce, or finance with emphasis dealing with China, a business degree may be a better fit. In general, if you have your eye on a state flagship research university, it would mostly likely have both a solid business program and a solid Chinese program.
Agree with prof2dad. UCLA has a great undergrad languages program and Anderson Bz school for grad school. Like warm weather and have school spirit? This is the place.
Agree with the others – it entirely depends on what you want to do with your life/your career. If you do want business (since the post is on the business major page) you may look into international business programs which may allow you to combine Chinese and business or you could take Chinese as elective courses. go into any business major, and look for a job with an international corporation that does business in or has offices in China.
I agree with all the above responses.
Also, being fluent in Chinese Mandarin and having an undergraduate business degree or similar degree like business econ would be an excellent combination, especial in dealing with companies in China, Taiwan, etc. Btw, UCLA’s business is a graduate program and that would be further down the road after you finish your 4 year degree and acquire some work experience.
I have a 3.7 unweighted GPA with 6 APs. 1350 SAT score but it may improve. I have looked at flagship programs especially at Hunter and San Fran State. I was then told I should be looking more into business programs. Any advice?
Do you reside in CA or outside CA and which state? I am familiar with SFSU but not Hunter. Out of state tuitions for public schools are usually high. There are many good public schools and private schools that offer Chinese Mandarin and have good undergraduate business schools. They might accept freshman directly into the business schools. Some like UC Berkeley’s Haas do not accept freshman directly to the business school though the university offers a top ranked language program like Chinese.
