So, I'm contemplating on double majoring on International Relations and Economics and I'll be a freshman this September. With the high mental and emotional costs of being a first semester freshman, would it be a good idea for me to start learning the language so soon? I'm eventually going to have to take 2 years of it to fulfill a language requirement, but I'm worried about the intense stories I've heard from Chinese learners in college (I have no background). Is it that hard to pick up and if it is, should I throw myself in it?

Btw, I'm taking about 16 credits.

If you’re going to take Chinese on top of those 16 credits I’d say no, but if they’re included it might not be a bad idea. I actually wish that I had taken my foreign language credits sooner because now they’re still haunting me since I procrastinated.

I’m also a potential IR/Econ major (one or the other or both) and I started taking Chinese my first semester. It ended up being my favorite class, albeit the most intense. I don’t recommend it on top of 16 credits, but I definitely recommend perhaps switching it out for another one of your classes. Start as soon as you can!

Well I haven’t chosen my classes yet but it would ideally be 16 credits, so yeah I’m definitely including it in. Thanks for the feedback guys !
