I know at the end it depends on how I want to be called. I'm starting my PhD in biomed in US this summer. I have an english name since I was a kid but not on official documents. Is it confusing/ not professional in classroom/ lab/ school if I tell others my english name, rather than the english pronunciation of my chinese name (which actually resembles not much to my 'real name')?

Probably English name since it’s easier for others to call you.

I would go with the English name for daily purposes, unless it’s something really professional where you have to go by your real, official name. My mom is Chinese, and at work she goes by her English name.

thanks for the input scofield and msgoldy. as my email account includes my english name in the name of sender, even though i only put my official name at the end of each email, they naturally call my english name. I guess this reflects their preference.
