interview? are we excused from taking the exam if we have an interview with the TA or professor?? or is the interview part of the exam?

for the placement exam, it only involves reading and writing, right? is there listening or speaking as well ((such as the interview))? for the writing, do we answer questions from text that we read, or is it writing an essay based on a general question, such as a proverb?

since i havent taken the exam myself, i dont know all the answers to the above. it for sure involves reading and writing (like a 1-page essay on something general). not sure about listening. the interview is the speaking portion. you have to "interview" (more like hold a 5 minute conversation in mandarin) with a TA after you turn in your written portion. native speakers said the interview was cake. it's the writing that most people get tripped up on.

you can't take the placement exam the first year and take the actual class sophomore year?? what if you take the exam this fall but decide not to enroll in the language class your first year? do you have to take the exam again in the fall of your sophomore year?

hmm i'm not 100% sure about this. i guess it should carry over. perhaps email the language department to confirm. however, i'm pretty sure the placement exam won't be an accurate representation of your skills one year down the line, especially because most people have little or no exposure to the language and forget a lot of it.
