Chinese Thread

hey guys , i have a question here.since i'm Chinese, does taking the SAT 2 Chinese ( and getting a good score) help at all in the college application? What will colleges think if a chinese takes the SAT 2 chinese test and get, say 800? I'm applying to the Ivies.

it is a bad idea to take ur own native tongue SAT 2 coz the test is mainly designed for students taking it as a second language... besides for native speakers, SAT 2 chinese is seriously, a joke.

I think getting 800 on SAT 2 chinese is really useless...not to mention the $$ you're wasting on this exam. I would definitely say don't take it. if you wanna make yourself competitive among all those ppl applying to ivies, just study really hard and ace the SAT2 in other subjects.

Hey fellow college frosh...how are you all doing now? I know tangsdaily and vanillaice have already arrived on campus a few days ago. I'm still in orientation week, and it seems to take forever since I feel like I've been here for such a long time already. Classes start on sept 1st and I'm really looking forward to it. Anyway hope everyone's enjoying college life~

if you got $$$$~$$$$$, find some lobbysts who can do you a high profile recom letter from XXXXXXXX to send to ivies. or if you have other connections, use it wisely. only those iron wristed connection counts at ivy. take care. 我真是无毒不丈夫

If you use money right? Thats just plain simple cheating. Why on earth would you cheat your way into Uni? Especially if you forge transcripts and evaluations, I read somewhere that they have soo many ways to check your application. Besides if you cheated your way into Uni you're screwed anyways cauz its doubtful you'll even keep up with your class.

Did Prince Wm pass?
Did Clinton cheat?????
Did Victor Li(educated Stanford but dropped out,he never mentioned it in his c.v about the dropped out part)--------?Now HKU and UCBerkeley both kowtowed to him and his DAD

一石激起千层浪, people started more discussion. i don't mean to encourage people forege transcript, but supplementary recom letter is always accepted at ivies. those high profile recom letters conducted by lobbysts are no way considered cheating by college standards. a good number of accepted ivy students had that unexpected connections involved, there is nothing "cheated" here, the schools open a door to one, and one doesn't choose it that's called disadvantage.

...
but remember the 'door' is only open to ppl who can spare '$$$$~$$$$$' for a 'rec'. sadly college admission's becoming more and more like a financial rather than academic competition. but of course, if any of those options are open to you, take advantage of it by all means. one thing i learned about college admissions is that you can't be too humble when it comes to such things.
anyway. i've also moved into my dorm. spent a while figuring out how to pull the bed out (there's a lever below that i was just too blind to see). everything else's alright. hope all's doing well.

Where are you studying yy0712?

university of texas at austin.
i also applied ed to princeton, deferred then rejected. but good luck to you!

good wish to everyone applying to princeton, stanford, columbia, wharton upenn, harvard, yale, swarthmore, williams, amherst, mit, cit, juliard, curtis, duke, dartmouth....... “这世界上本来没有路,走的人多了便成了路。” 鲁迅

sorry guys, have not posted for a LONG time.well, kinda busy with school,my life is basically composed of studying+socializing,HA.yup, good luck to everyone applying to college this year.i got in,and i'm sure you will too!

how's first week of college, anybody?..... i miss home so much... even though i thought i wouldnt :(

I am a student originated from Hong Kong, but am now studying in the UK.

I haven't even done my SATs, but I'm planning to apply for freshman Princeton, Cornell, Johns Hopkins and Stanford. Going for the sciences, but haven't decided which field exactly. (Probably chemical engineering, I'm doing phy and chem in F.6 / Year 12) I seriously have not much confidence in my SATs, since I studied in England for 3 years and my maths level cannot reach the same level as that of the States. Really worried right now. :(

I have just done my GCSEs... got 9A*s including Chinese, Maths, German, Geography, Economics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, R.S. plus 2 As (English and Eng Lit), got a Chinese A Level and Music Advanced Subsidiary. I have no idea whether you guys know what I'm talking about... but hey these are kinda my stats.

I joined the choir, orchestra, madrigal, Duke of Edinburgh Scheme (sumthin like AYP in Hong Kong - doing gold level this year). very devoted to music - grade 8 in piano and flute, grade 6 in singing. did a bit of fencing before I went to the UK, also joined the Girl Guides.

Nice to meet you all... It'd be great if you can give me some advice as to whether my chances are low or high. (Dun think you can decide until you see my SAT scores though) I'm under great pressure becuz I haven't really done any work and I'm doing my SAT I this October. Gonna do SAT II in November if I can make it. If not I'll just stick to my UK universities... but I have no idea which ones I may get into!

^^can you speak in a british accent?
i doubt you'll have much trouble with SAT math, don't they teach solving linear equations before GCSES, if you know how to solve x+5=10, i think you can get at least 720+ on SAT I math
and if you can solve x^2=36, you can pretty much get 700+ in IIc
UK schools are very nice, i would really like to go there one day :) i hear the gloomy weather in UK is so depressing that it actually cause ppl to commit suicide. but either way good luck in all of your application process everyone.
hopefully you guys hit the target at the top of your college list and don't have to do what i did (going to my safety school :()

someone_special , welcome

Did you do A level?

I think GCSE actually does not fulfill most colleges' high school requirment. Four to five A levels usually would put you into decent shape. 9 GCSE A s are certainly very impressive ..lots of coursework.... But A level and IB are pretty much the standards for us colleges' admission.

Wait, you said you did 6th form year 12 in chem and physics, is that it?

sat math is easy, don't worry, just pay close attention at tricks they might fool you into.

hey, the special one, nice to meet you too :)
yea. don't worry too much about math. if you know how to use a graphing calculator, you should seriously be fine. just get used to the diff types of questions, then you'll have no problem.
school started last wednesday... but will officially start next week for me. now i'm home for the labor day weekend. i feel soo lucky.
looks like a lot of work are waiting to be done already. i'll still hang around here but definitely won't be online as often.
Good luck everyone. It's my pleasure to meet you all the past year. Best, best of luck to you all.

Hello again! Thanks so much for replying guys.

I'm starting school on Tuesday... Going back to the UK tmr. sigh holiday's ended too quicky dun u think? gonna start A Level this year... i'm doing my AS in Lower 6, then if i'm not going to the US i'll be completing my full A Level in Upper 6. i'm going to do Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Further Maths and Music. already done a Chinese AL cuz that's my native language.

Newbyreborn i do have some sorta english accent... but i think some parts remain with a lil bit of cantonese accent. weird accent i got, lol

i hope i reli dun have to worry about maths... i've ordered a book from Amazon and it's arriving on the 23rd by the latest. (Barron's Maths IIC) i'm kinda worried that one month wouldn't be enough for me to stuff maths IIc, chemistry and physics in! (i'm taking the SAT II test in november)

the chemistry syllabus is totally different, and i haven't covered all of the maths and physics syllabus... a bit screwed. -.-"

school is awwwesome.... mit frats are awesome too.... im sooo in love with wellesley rite now
