What is your least favorite part about Choate? Are there “average” people there?
Boy with a eye mask? Kid will be teased for ever!
Then he can sleep with a pillow over his head. But if you desire more in-depth comments:
(A) The question of roommate negotiations is academic until one actually gets accepted and has been assigned a roommate that has a different sleep cycle.
(B) I’ve seen worse fashion decisions and have managed to make no comment
(C) Nobody other than the roommate will see
(D) If they see, they won’t care
(E) If he thinks he’s getting to bed at 9:30, I’ve got news for him.
(F) It is unlikely that any student, no matter who progressive and supportive the school is, will go for years without ever receiving a gentle mocking. This is a high school, not Shangri-La . If that’s an issue for him, then home schooling would be a better alternative.
@ChoatieMom yes, @Altras is absolutely correct. Another question I received was about how much I wished to use the room socially (would I invite a few friends over occasionally, use it for big gatherings, or just limit it to my roommate and I?). They also ask about what size (big or small) dorm I wished to live in.
Although the questionnaire is pretty thorough (multiple choice and short answer, around 10-15 questions) the new boarding student pairings aren’t always perfectly compatible which is unfortunate but expected. Rarely are roommate pairings changed (most just grumble a bit and stick with it), but I haven’t heard of any atrocious pairings so the Choate rooming system is still quite well done.
Do students ever stay up past lights out? I’m wondering…what if you have a big essay and you’re not done?
Yes - you request late study hours.
@CavsFan2003 yeah so “late lights” can be requested from advisors which will be anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour (sometimes more, it really depends on the advisor and how much work you have). Unfortunately, the internet restrictions can’t be changed so you just have to make do by using data or doing non-internet related homework. The wifi turns back on at 6 in the morning so you can wake up early to finish homework as well.
To be completely honest, there are a significant amount of students who stay up past lights out either to do homework of play on their phones without permission. The administration in no way encourages this, but it’s simply just the result of being in an academically competitive environment.
