Hi guys,
The other day, I went on Choate’s website and saw that they extended the deadline for Fall 2020 because of COVID-19. I just sent in my application yesterday.
What’s the chance of being accepted if I applied late without the SSAT and why didn’t they just take applicants off the waitlist?
Here are my stats:
I am Asian-American and a female. In freshman year, I had an unweighted GPA of 4.0 and a waited GPA of 4.5 at a VERY competitive high school (I took all honors classes except for journalism and another required non-honors course). If I don’t move to Choate next year, I’ll also be the Copy Editor of my nationally recognized school newspaper. I’m more of a humanities person, so I believe my short answer questions were written quite well. My teacher recommendations should also be strong because I received a few special school awards from the teachers who are writing my recs (each teacher can nominate up to 5 students.)
I’ve been heavily invested in creative writing, art, piano, and classics as well. I’ve gotten my writing published in several journals (professional level) and I’ve won a lot of JCL awards as well as served as the historian for my school’s JCL chapter. I attached a portfolio showcasing my art, creative writing, and journalism. I mentioned in the essays that I’m particularly interested in the arts concentration, because that’ll grant me more time to focus on my passion. In seventh grade, I performed at Carnegie Hall after winning 2nd place in the American Protege International Competition, and I also attached a piano supplement to the multimedia section.
I listed out some specific awards in the “accomplishments” section, but this is just a general overview.
Thank you so much!
I have received over 30 views and no reply yet. Any opinions would be appreciated!
Are you sure they extended the application deadline?
In any case, I’m thinking that without a completed application – and I’m thinking an SSAT would count in that? – chances would be quite slim.
I don’t think anyone knows how to answer- everything is so strange right now.
Wishing you well, though.
@radioactivebird - I think that the “extended deadline” refers to the deadline for tuition, not applications. Choate’s class is full for now.
@ecowell I thought the same thing but if you go on Choate’s website it does say that they are accepting applications for Fall 2020 because of the unknown of Covid 19.
@radioactivebird good luck in applying! I don’t think any of us can be much help since this is a new development.
Hate to tell you, but your chances are quite low, probably almost zero. It’s not that you aren’t qualified its just that they are full (actually from what I heard overenrolled), thus the best you could hope for is a spot on the waitlist. So, if spaces in their class were to open up, then you might be considered for a spot.
At this point in the game, to even be offered a spot on their waitlist you would have to be a candidate that they would’ve likely accepted back in the original round of applications. These schools have large waitlists and already have more than enough qualified students lined up for potential space.
Back when I was applying to BS, I didn’t even find out about applications until February. We asked a few BS in March if I could still turn in an application, and they said sure, but that the best I could get would be a spot on the waitlist should I be qualified. I ended up being offered spots on the WL for Lawrenceville, Hotchkiss, Choate, and Deerfield, but I didn’t get off any of them for the fall. The next year I applied in a timely manner before the January deadlines and was accepted to Deerfield, Choate, and Hotchkiss (WL at L’ville again).
