Hey guys, this is for all you Choaties out there, and I know you exist! I am heavily leaning towards Choate right now, so I felt like starting a thread. I promise to update this thread as much as possible, and hopefully compete with all the big threads such as the SPS one.

I love Choate!

Me too! I just love the name… Choate Rosemary Hall. haha.
The only thing is I can’t find anything on their art program! They apparently have a good one, but the only thing I can find on the website is about the facilities… not helpful!

At the rate this is going, it probably won’t generate as much discussion as SPS.

^^Ikr! when i was there i barely saw any art. Or maybe i wasn’t paying attention…lol

Here is the link to their arts curriculum: [Choate Rosemary Hall: Academics » Curriculum](Curriculum - Choate Rosemary Hall | Private Boarding & Day School)

On Youtube, there are dozens of video performances. For example, this is an excerpt from a Choate spring musical in 2008: [YouTube - No, No, Nanette - Choate Musical](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQR3pstefZ8)

This is the video of their girls accapella group Lilith singing Faith: [YouTube - Choate Lilith singing Faith](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-XYKJBtCOQ&feature=related)

Search for related videos, their should be plenty. Choate’s arts program is very professional and abundant. If you have any question, I think it’s appropriate to email the arts teachers (their email addresses are publicly available on the school website). I’ve always received timely and detailed responses.

Besides, I read somewhere that the consensus among many Choate students is that Choate’s arts department places the most emphasis on theatre, while dance is not as prominent. The arts faculty, however, claims to maintain balance.

I am quite active in the Choate Arts Department Here are a few things you might want to know:

Arts Requirements:
Every 4 year student must take 3 arts course. One freshman year, one sophomore/junior year, and one senior year. They have to be from at least two different areas. So visual arts and music would work. We have a ridiculously wide range of subjects, I have just completed a course on music in the 1960s, and earlier I did film photography, where we have the privilege of our own darkroom on campus. Other offerings include: digital photography, jewelry making, printmaking, the age of enlightenment, stagecraft, and screenwriting. And there are so many others!

Music Lessons:
Students can opt to take weekly hour-long lessons in an instrument of their choice (including voice lessons, drums, guitar, piano, cello, harp etc.) which will be scheduled into their weekly commitments. They do cost extra but certain scholarships offer some if not complete fee coverage.

Theater:
We have a very active theater department with at least six productions a year. The spring musical for many is a highlight of the year, with a competitive audition process and an impressive final result. What is really nice about our theater department is that students who participate come from all around campus, not just a small group of ‘theater kids.’ Athletes, science whizzes and, yes, broadway enthusiasts alike all take part in the department. Thanks to a generous grant, all shows are free to the Choate community so they almost always get wonderful turnouts.

A Cappella:
We have several a cappella groups with students, again, from all around campus. They perform not just on Choate grounds but at several events with the Wallingford community.

Arts Concentration:
Arts Concentration is a fabulous part of Choate’s arts department. I was recently accepted into the program and I am incredibly excited. Basically, it gives students an opportunity to spend their afternoons for at least two terms a year working on their art, be it dance, theater, visual arts or technical theater, rather than doing a sport. In addition, students get an adviser from the department to supervise their work, several extra course requirements to supplement their extra-curricular development, field trips dealing with various fields of art, and a recital, senior play or exhibition in their senior year as a culmination of what they have learned. This program is wonderful for those interested in pursuing the arts beyond high school, but also merely as an enrichment program during our time here.

If you have any other questions please feel free to pm me, I love a chance to help out!

^that’s what they tell you. But what I’m saying is that we never see anything they actually DO. Liek no displayed artwork or anything… seems like a bunch of talk.

There are beautiful examples of student artwork displayed all over the Paul Mellon Art Center complex, concerts and recitals almost every weekend, the past two weekends featured five performances of West Side Story to around 600 people each night (several nights were sold out)…the arts seems pretty visible to me.

I’m just saying from what they publicized when the majority of us were touring/on the website (note:I haven’t been on the site in awhile) there was not much art around. Not saying that they don’t have ANY, but that it was not really all that well put out to applicants.
