Choate Rosemary Hall Wallingford, CT

Hey guys! This is a thread for people wanting to know more, entering, current students, alumni, or applicants that are applying to Choate. There's countless of other threads, so why not make an official one? SPS has one (so does Exeter), so why not Choate?
Also, it's a nice way to meet your future classmates!

I'll start!

Hi, I'm a Latino male, entering as a III Former (9th grade). My academic strengths' are in History and Math. I play volleyball already and wish to continue at Choate, and I want to try Ice Hockey in the winter, but cant decide between football and water polo for the fall. I'm also a thespian xD and I'm from New York City. I chose Choate over Cate, Concord, and St. Andrew's (DE)

Out of curiousity, why did you choose Choate over the above named schools?

Well, St. Andrews was eliminated first because I was only allowed to revisit 3. Concord was WAY too small, so small it was awkward. Cate and Choate were tied. I loved both so much! But Choate had that home feeling and it was closer to home. Although, I almost picked Cate! But Choate has been my number one since the fall. Better college placement and more reputation/prestige. I felt more challenged at Choate.

Hey !
For anyone looking into apply as sophomores at Choate, I can help as well!

I am a Chinese male going into 10th grade this year at Choate. My academic strengths are math and science. I’m not an athlete by any means, but I am a musician. I play 6 different instruments and definitely want to pursue the arts at Choate. I am from Boston, MA.

Only instrument I’ve played was the recorder in elementary school, haha. I want to learn how to play the guitar at Choate though!

BronxKid,

Were you the guy who watched a part of our volleyball practice?

lol swampedwithwork you so crazy

yeah o.O you make me sound like a creep… a peeping tom lol

Really, you watched one of our practices and you still want to play volleyball here? I’m impressed!

You guys aren’t bad though, my team was worse xD I was the best one on my team. You guys are actually pretty good. I saw you guys won the first game of the season, gratz! I can’t wait to join you guys next year :)

I’m not saying our team is bad, I’m saying our coach is insane! You weren’t there when he made me and my friend sprint two laps around the track for not doing our drill correctly?

Oh, my bad. I was thinking at first “what is this guy talking about? This team is awesome!” Yeah, your coach is scary in a motivating way. I remember that though! I just can’t remember your face. My coach wasn’t as motivating as yours, so I’m actually excited to start playing with such a demanding coach. Is the captain always a senior? Can it be a junior? (Sorry for the random question)

He’s really a great coach; I think you’ll enjoy your season. :)

Well we have four seniors leaving our team this year, and we’ll only have one senior next year which means that one of our captains next year will probably be a junior.

Can’t wait for the spring :)

Do you play any other sports?

Hey guys! I feel kinda bad for butting into your guys’ conversations, since you’re all getting to know each other, but I have some questions that I want to ask. (I hope that’s okay with you guys.)

I’m going to apply to Choate to hopefully be an entering sophomore. How many people enter in as sophomores? And how is the transition like for new sophomores?

I know Choate is a great school and everything, but what makes you guys stand out from a crowd of let’s say, kids from Andover or kids from Deerfield? What makes you different from the kids at those schools? (I hope you don’t think I’m being picky or anything like that when I ask this. I’m just curious about your opinion.)

Hey! Going to be a new sophomore in the fall as well!
Looking forward to meeting all of you

@BronxKid,

I play soccer. :)

@circle,

1.

I entered Choate as a new sophomore. I want to say about 30% of the sophomore class is new students, but I’m not too sure about it. It is quite a substantial number though, so don’t worry, you won’t be alone! I will admit, the transition is a little tough at first. I think people will agree with me that freshman year is really the adjustment year and the year that you can sort of fool around in. Coming in as a new sophomore, sometimes I just feel completely bogged down in sports, work, and clubs, but there’s always a learning curve and I’m just glad I didn’t come in as a junior… Imagine all that work! About halfway into the year, people can’t really remember/care who was new and who was a returner because everyone starts to mingle together. Just remember that you’ll get frustrated sometimes, but you’ll live.

2.

That’s a really great question, definitely a good question to ask during an interview to an admissions officer who is probably much better prepared to answer that question than I am.

Remember that most of the schools look for similar things. A lot of my friends were admitted to Andover/Exeter/Hotchkiss/Deerfield, but chose to come to Choate for their own reasons. This being said, they could easily have gone to those other great schools. What I’m saying is that there probably isn’t too large of a difference. Deerfield has a reputation for being extremely preppy (they actually do live up to this reputation because they come to all of the sporting events wearing blazers and button-ups…), Exeter has a reputation for being extremely smart, almost to the extent of not having a life, etc. etc. Stereotypes aren’t always true though. I have a friend at Deerfield who isn’t preppy, and a friend at Exeter who very much so has a social life.

One of the first things I noticed though is that Choate is quite a diverse community. Looking into the crowd of Deerfield students on Deerfield Day, I felt like the group was entirely composed of upper-class New England-born students. This definitely is not true at Choate, but then again I’m also making generalizations. I’m sure you’d be happy at any of these great schools.

Almost everyone in CC going to Choate next year as new students are sophomores! Where are all the Freshmen?!

Class of 2014 !!!

Brandon, are you doing any sports at next year?
