Third formers usually go on the trips to New Haven, Boston, and New York. If your parents check off the box to allow you to do this, you won’t have to go through the dean’s office to get permission to go to these places. You do get the permission slips at the beginning of each school year.

There are music ensembles for each level. What instrument do you play? I can give you more info once I know that. Auditions are the first two weeks of school I believe.

How about for violin?

Hi, everyone! I’m an incoming fourth former at Choate this Fall and I recently viewed most of my classes online. I found out that I was placed in a Chemistry class lower than expected and regular history (I applied for honors history). Can these placements be changed? Thanks!

I play viola, piano, and bassoon. I think I will probably be doing viola prossibly bassoon. Do they let the third formers go alone/ with friends or do they go on school trips with like adult chaperones?

I understand that it is very difficult to get into the chamber orchestra, esp for third formers. But are there ensembles that take beginners, or is everyone national champions that have been playing since they were 2???I am kind of intermediate in both, but I’m pretty sure I’ll be placed in a lower ensemble, espescially since when the auditions take place I will have not played for like 3 months in bassoon and a few weeks for viola… in the course guide, it was kind of confusing explaining skill and experience levels. Is wind ensemble and string orchestra advanced, intermediate beginner??

@pingu21198: Yes, students do move among course levels during the first two weeks of school (usually down, not up). It will become clear in those first days if any of your classes are not a best fit, and you will work with your teacher and your advisor to re-calibrate. No worries; you will end up where you are best challenged.

@ChoatieMom: Thanks for your reply! I hope to move up levels, if they are best for me.

Even though slacks are allowed, are they considered too formal, since you can wear colored denim? If I didn’t go to re-visit day, will I be totally lost during the first days in terms of how to get around campus, residential life, etc??

Hi again, everyone! I am not from the United States, hence schools in my country do not have summer breaks (we use a very different system!). This means that I’ve never had a summer reading list before. As an incoming student at Choate, I would like to know how the school uses these summer books once classes begin. What kind of test(s) will be given (please elaborate)? Will reading materials be discussed for the entire term or merely at the beginning of the year? Thanks very much for all your help!

Would love to know more about this too…
