I'm wondering if anyone could help me with these schools. I have gotten responses from the admissions offices this past week saying that they liked me. The problem is though, that Deerfield says that they want a 100 % positive response that Deerfield is my 1st choice if I want a shot at getting in. Could anyone tell me pros/cons about these schools?

Deerfield is the best and you are lucky to have a chance to get in and should jump in at the opportunity! We have the best swim and waterpolo teams that are New England Champions!!

Go Big Green!!

How is the math department?

The Math Dept is very strong with great teachers. The curriculum goes through Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations, MAT 802 Advanced Math Tutorial, and MAT 902 Independent Study in Math. The Math Club president is matriculating to Harvard this year.

Do you think you would prefer an urban or a rural setting? Some students love Deerfield because of its rural setting, and others choose not to go there for that very reason. Choate on the other hand is pretty much situated right in the cute town of Wallingford, CT.

Ruralmama, We are very close to nearby towns Greenfield and Northampton and we have a bus/shuttle that goes to these towns on weekends. Weekdays our schedule is busy with classes, sports, ECs, homework, so no time to go off campus. I visited Wallingford and it’s not big like Boston or NYC to make a difference.

That’s true… Wallingford is just a little town, not a big city. But, if SwedishSwimmer is trying to decide between them, I think it is a difference that might play a factor. Our family loved both regardless of setting. But I’ve seen some postings on CC where rural vs. town was either the deal-clincher or the deal-breaker as to which school was ultimately chosen.

Congratulations. You are one step closer to Deerfield. I would take their comment as a positive signal. However, couldn’t you have just asked about the pros and cons of those schools without getting too much in details? I heard many admissions people from HADES schools often visit CC and if I were one of them, I would not have appreciated your detailed disclosure too much.

Some schools advise making an informed decision when choosing a school, and even put it in writing – they want their students to be happy, and encourage attending their revisit days. They ask for a response by a particular date, but their offers of admission aren’t conditional. If schools are interested enough to contact you before the “official date,” you must be a very attractive applicant – that’s not going to change in the next three weeks. If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit any of these places or can’t, it’s important to gather as much information as you can before you pick a school. Deerfield appears to be more traditional, has a dress code, and the campus is situated in an historic New England village whereas Choate is more casual, has a great arts program, and a more diverse community (closer to NYC). The academics and sports programs are probably comparable. Don’t know anything about Westminster, but people seem to like it.

Is it common for the admissions office to contact students before March 10th with admission offers? I thought the March 9th or 10th dates were set in stone?

The school hasn’t made any offers yet. They may be just gauging the student’s interest in the school. The official offers only come on March 9th or 10th.
