Hello everyone,

I am willing to start a Software Engineering program (in the Computer Science field) and so I have applied to a few school and I am wondering which one to join. First of all, the list of the schools I have been accepted in:

-Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Indiana)
-Allegheny College (Pensylvania)
-Oregon Institute of Technology (Oregon)
-Michigan Technological University (Michigan)
-Davis & Elkins College (West Virginia)

I have been looking closely at the rankings. It seems that Rose-Hulman IT and Allegheny are both the best schools in the US ranking, but it seems Rose-Hulman IT is ranked a little better. For this reason, Rose-Hulman IT and Allegheny come as my first choices.

Then, it seems that in an "Institute of Technology" I will be only studying computer science related course but in a "College" or "University" I might have some general courses (mostly in freshman year). This puts Rose-Hulman IT as my first choice again.

So far I'm really hesitating between RHIT and Allegheny, but I wanted you to give me your opinion. I would really like to know which school offers the best education, which one has the best reputation and maybe mostly, which one offers the best job and the best chances to pursue a master degree after I graduate.

I am really looking forward for your advices, thank you.

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is by far the best school there. I think. I would choose that school, because I've actually heard of it's computer science program and it's fairly good.

Thank you Sheed30. It is so far my 1st choice, with Allegheny a little behind as I said earlier. I hope to hear from more people just to make sure I make the right choice.

Since you want us to tell you the obvious, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is by far your best choice.

The obvious difference between Rose-Hulman and Allegheny is the degree requirements. At Allegheny, you will have to minor in an area completely unrelated to computer science - part of their "unusual combinations" program. The liberal arts courses are also going to be better than at Rose-Hulman. However, if you want to focus on tech courses with a minimum of other courses, then RHIT is the one for you.

More snow at Allegheny.

Ah thank you very much. My decision is now very clear then. Heading to RHIT. Thanks for the information.

No Problem, I'm sure you'll do amazing things there.

Sorry to bother you again but another university accepted, which is Minnesota State University, Mankato. I do not think it is as good as Rose-Hulman IT but I would just like to have a quick confirmation so I can sleep in peace.

Thank you.

Rose-Hulman IT is head and shoulders and another head and shoulders above Minnesota

go sleep in peace

Thanks again Sheed30. I'm sorry to be bothering you guys but as it is a decision that may stick for the next 4 years of my life at least, I like to be sure it is the best choice. Thanks again.

Rankings & Reputation

As of 2007, the institute has been ranked first in its category (engineering colleges whose highest degree offered is a Bachelors's or Master's) by U.S. News & World Report for nine consecutive years (2000-2008). (In both of the most recent years it was tied with Harvey Mudd College.) Each individual program assessed has also been ranked first since the magazine has published individual rankings. These programs are the chemical, civil, computer, electrical, and mechanical engineering programs.[8]

Other publications giving Rose-Hulman high marks include: Newsweek, Fiske, Peterson's, Barron's, and The Princeton Review.[9]

While Rose is not considered in the doctoral institution rankings, Stanford University's Hoover Institute fellow, Thomas Sowell, mentioned Rose-Hulman as one of the best smaller universities to consider, noting that graduate engineering deans have ranked its graduates ahead of many top schools with Ph.D programs, such as Duke, Princeton, UCLA, and the University of Pennsylvania.
