Choir and Biology school in one?

I'm very interested in doing choir as a serious extracurricular and a possible minor in vocal performance. I want to go into biomedical sciences as a major though. Does anyone have any suggestions for a school that has a great choir program and biology/medical program? I'd prefer a school that has at least 2,000 students enrolled, I don't have very specific and set preferences otherwise.

Thank you!

What are your stats? How much can you afford per year? Home state?

St Olaf is always one of the first recommended schools for serious choir members.

Check out Oberlin and also Case Western.

St. Olaf, Lawrence and Oberlin spring to mind.

Florida State is very strong in vocal music and pure sciences.

Less than 2000 students but Houghton College in New York has an agreement for med school that makes it great option for students wanting to go to med school. http://www.houghton.edu/biology/lecom/

Interestingly, the Greatbatch School of Music at Houghton College was built due to a gift made by Wilson Greatbatch who invented the pacemaker. <a href=“Major in Music at a Christian University | Houghton University”>http://www.houghton.edu/music/

I

Use the SuperMatch. Also, consider googling “Best College A Capella Groups” and looking hard at those schools.

ACT is 30, GPA is 40, I’m looking at need base and merit based scholarships and colleges about $35,000-$40,000 max.

Take a look at Concordia College (Moorhead, MN, www.cord.edu); slightly smaller enrollment than St. Olaf, but same caliber choir that tours internationally. Also Cord has 88% med school acceptance rate, a vaccinology minor (in conjunction with ND State, MN State-Moorhead, & local biotech industry), as well as a highly successful health care administration program.

Homestate is MN,I’m hoping to go out of state.

Just to be clear, what is the $35-40K max? Is that what you can pay out-of-pocket per year, or is that your total cost of attendance limit?

I can understand wanting to explore out of state, but the choral culture of MN is going to be hard to beat.

Smaller than St. Olaf, but good choral music and decent science programs: Luther College, Decorah, IA.

Lawrence would be fantastic, although it is smaller than you specify. Also check out Millikin University in Illinois–very well-regarded touring choir program. Additionally, you might search Lutheran colleges outside of Minnesota–they tend to have a strong choral tradition and you can research individual schools’ pre-professional programs.

You’re going to have a hard time beating St Olaf for choir+ biology - it’s got one of the best touring choirs in the country (some say the best a cappella choir in the country), the other ensembles are quite good too if you don’t make the cut, and biology is excellent (internships at the Mayo Clinic).
Lawrence, Concordia, Luther would be good possibilities. Lawrence in particular has a strong science program and a conservatory. You may want to check out Pacific Lutheran if you want a school at Luther’s level, but on the West Coast.

Take a look at Bard College. The chair of the music dept is also the director of NYC’s Collegiate Chorale. And the Bard chorus performs often with The American Symphony Orchestra.
