stevenson
My choices were based on stereotypes that i’ve heard about the different colleges.
Particularly Cowell, it was my top choice but went down to fourth. I’m not sure how true this is but I hear that there were 2 showers/bathrooms for an entire floor and that kind of thing turned me off completely.

Apparently 10 was very nice and spacious so i chose that. I also liked the fact that 9 and 10 were more centrally located.

Not to sound like a bigot in any way, but I haven’t had much interaction with Caucasian folks so my top 2 colleges have an Asian stereotype. I figure i’d be comfortable with them and I would get used to having non-minorities around me as the year progresses.

2/3 showers per floor is pretty standard at UCSC. You’d be surprised, there’s not much contention for showers even on a floor of 30-40 people. I’m fairly certain the 9/10 bathrooms are the same.

9/10 is generally a bit more spacious than the other colleges though, yes. And they are very, very asian. I have no idea how the stereotype even got started, but yeah.

Hi, I’m highly considering attending UCSC this fall and I had a few questions about the colleges. Does the college you pick really have a big impact on the academic side of things? I wouldn’t consider myself a nerd but I do have some nerdy habits like playing video games and my major would probably be in the science/computer field. I wouldn’t mind sharing similar interests with others but if it’s at the point where the highlight of every friday night are WoW raids, I think that’s overkill and not for me. I’m not into the party scene. I don’t drink or smoke, so I would prefer to be away from that stuff if possible. I just want somewhere where I can meet new, chill people who want to do well in school but at the same time be fun to hangout with. I want somewhere that’s quiet so I can get study and get things done if needed. I also want somewhere that isn’t too far from the rest of the campus and has a dining hall with good food. Any ideas which colleges I should choose for my top 5?

Nope. Doesn’t affect academics a whole lot. There are certain “academic focus” houses- but all those really provide is a little extra quiet when you need it.

You do sound like a Crownie. The majority of the college is like you- in a science field, but with a good mix of nerdy and not nerdy interests. And many of us prefer blanket forts and nerf gun wars to your average college party. Plus it definitely helps to be around a bunch of people in the same major you are! And if I do say so myself, we have one of the better dining halls. It’s also fairly central - 5 minutes from quarry plaza, 10 minutes from science hill. Crown fits your specifications quite well.

In fact you fit Crown so well it’s a bit hard to place a #2…Merrill has some similar attributes. You might also enjoy 9/10, the party scene isn’t too intense and it’s still relatively quiet. Only downside is that the dining hall is probably the worst on campus due to the constant presence of junk food with little variety.

Hm I’m really not sure what college to pick. I don’t really like hanging out around athletic type people, but I would still like to be able to have some partying. I like playing video games, and might bring my gaming rig with me, but I don’t play tooo much, just casually.

I was thinking maybe Cowell because people say everyone is pretty normal there, and they have some parties. However like I said I dont enjoy being around the athletic crowd, I just like hanging out. I’m not a big fan of pretentious hipsters and people of that nature, but I’m fine with artsy people and stuff. How are the people at Porter? I heard Kresge has kinda douchy hipsters, so i dont really want to go there. Is it the same at Porter?

Do 9 and 10 really have a ridiculous amount of asians? I mean I do enjoy the company of asians, I would just prefer not to have a tooooooooon of asians around me haha. The colleges themselves look nice though.

My list at the moment includes Porter, Cowell, 9, 10, and Crown.

What do you think? Which would suit me best?

Porter is similar, but more laid back about the hipster thing from what I’ve seen. Stevenson has the same “normal-ness” as Cowell, but less in the jock department. 9/10 have a high asian population. It’s probably the least diverse, racially. I’d consider dumping something from your list for Stevenson.

^I’ve had the opposite experience with hipsters. I find them to be way worse and d o u c h e y at Porter. I feel like Kresge is more hippie than hipster.

I feel like I’m being negative though haha. Honestly, I lived at Porter for 2 years and managed to avoid both those types of people (hippie and hipster) and made friends with “”"“normal”""" people who like to play video games and party on occasion. So really, a lot of these things we say and things people ask about are just huge generalizations based on stereotypes.

What is the core curriculum like at porter? I feel like I would enjoy the people there, but how art based is the curriculum? Because I’m going into bioengineering and am not TERRIBLE, but definitely not very good at art haha. Is it a lot of analyzing art throughout the years or something?

I just went through the booklet on the campuses and didn’t really see any that I felt suits me.

I’m looking for a campus that’s tight knit, yet diverse and open minded. I doubt I could ever be in a college notorious for being overwhelmingly full of hippies/stoners/hipsters/etc, though with that being said, Im not close minded. I don’t have a problem with smoking/partying/etc. so long as it’s not excessive; excessive studying is also not for me lol. I want to be able to legitimately connect with people on campus (tight knit) even if we might not share the same hobbies/ideals/etc; I would love to be able to hangout with people that enjoy being in nature, and then hangout with people that love doing the exact opposite.

As far as my own personal hobbies go, I like to keep a balance in my everyday life. I’m intelligent, but not overly studious. I enjoy going out, but I also enjoy relaxing. I’m far from being a fitness buff, but I have recently begun to go to the gym and hope to continue doing so. About the only thing I might overdo pertains to my music taste; People often tease me, saying that I listen to more rap music than I should lol.

I took it almost 3 years ago, so it might have changed a bit since then, but it really wasn’t that focused on art. It was basically a study of how different forms of media (film, plays, comic books, etc.) convey the message of a story. For example, we had to read Persepolis and analyze how the drawing style affected how the characters were portrayed and whether it was an effective means of communication and stuff like that. So we weren’t necessarily analyzing art, but rather analyzing the different ways stories are told and how the artistic parts of it contribute to the meaning. It really wasn’t that bad at all haha.

Anybody have anything to say about the core curriculum for Stevenson? I know its 2 quarters long as opposed to one, and from what i can see it has something to do with religion (i see that you read selections from the bible and qur’an and stuff. Is it difficult or worth the extra quarter?

Things about me:
-girl from northern california (Humboldt)
-smokes weed but only about once a week
-parties and alcohol are ok
-doesn’t really mind hard drugs but doesn’t want to be around them 24/7
-very liberal and environmentally friendly
-hippie at heart but doesn’t like dirty hippies (I like clean people)
-loves to be outgoing to meet new people
-wants to still study and do good in school
-loves science (biology major)
-not very big on stuck up people, I like silly people who aren’t completely crazy

I’m thinking about C8, kresge, porter, cowell, C9, and C10
should I add/remove one? and what order should I put them in based on my interests?
Thank you! :)

We just got back from UCSC today. Met a girl who was working at one of the dining halls, a student. She summed it up like this:
Porter: weed
Merrill: quiet kids
Oakes: “diverse”
College 8: bros
Cowell/Stevenson: Jewish, jocks, cheerleaders
Kresge: like to cook, super quiet don’t meet people outside apartment
College 9 and 10: Asian

We walked around and, yes, she was pretty darn close. It actually helped a lot!!! Son LOVES campus, it is gorgeous and kids seem very “normal” and happy…lots of variety of kids, even frats and soroities!

I am a transfer student so I am automatically assigned housing to Porter College for at least my first quarter. I still am going to be prompted to choose a college and was wondering which one would be good for a transfer? I am not into smoking but… should I just officially chose Porter to avoid all the annoying (no offense) high school teeny boppers? Does anyone know if transfers generally stay put at porter? I was thinking about cowell

Hello, I’ve been reading these past three days on colleges for UCSC and it’s so incredibly intimidating and confusing choosing one. -___- I narrowed my choices down to Cowell, Porter, C9, Crown, Stevenson. The only one I remember visiting was Cowell and I liked the general area with the view of the field. The only thing I didn’t like about it was that the dorm hallways were super narrow. But any help would be phenomenally appreciated!
As for information regarding myself;
-I am a tall Filipino that is open-minded and would be down for occasional substances, backpacking, whatever SC has to offer.
-I am looking to be a biology major with a minor in jazz studies which brings me to say that I’m a very musical person and play the trombone and other instruments. I love listening to music and would love to meet other people to jam with. I’m also down with meeting other artsy types and whatnot.
-I’m pretty down for gamers and the sort and nerds, but I’m also down for parties I suppose. I just don’t want to be totally engulfed in it. I’d like to spend time studying as well? LOL
-I like people who respect others decisions and whatnot. I’d prefer no stoners or hippies on a daily basis I suppose? I’m not quite sure what else to say but that’s about it.
Oh I’d also like to add that it would be hella dope if my roommate could play an instrument so that we could jam together. I’d also like to add that for my main music that I listen to is EDM and Jazz and some other random stuff. So I also glove and whatnot, but no drugs.

Hi guys,
I’ve been reading through this thread and seeing a lot of people get some really helpful advice, so I thought I’d create an account and give it a try.
What college would you suggest for a guy like myself?
-From a small town in California
-Biology major
-Not a gamer
-I love the outdoors/the whole Eco scene
-Like healthy food
-I love to bike and hike, and would be interested in outdoor adventure activities
-Love music. I play drums and piano and am considering minoring in music. It would be awesome to jam with people (that’s you CDynamic!), or hang out at the music center.
-Not into drugs or alcohol, or obnoxious parties
-I like the idea of being centralized on campus
-I’m academic and focused, but I need a balance of work and play to stay sane. haha

I think I’ve narrowed my choices down to Stevenson, Cowell, 19, 8, and Crown (in no particular order).
Any help is much appreciated!
