Choosing a college at UCSC

@CDynamic: You seem like a good fit in any of the colleges you listed, but perhaps not really porter. Other than that, I’d suggest going by college theme to narrow down your choice.

@CaseyCallow: Yeah I also agree that c8 would fit best for you.

I’m a mexican-american. I come from the poorer area of my so-cal city.

My top choices are c9, c10, c8, cowell and oakes.

I’m really looking for diversity especially with latinos and asians. I would love to meet internationals. Have an opportunity to learn about new cultures.

I’m majoring in computer science: game design. I like to game, but I’m not a total nerd who doesn’t leave his room for days. I wana be able to meet people who would like to go, play water polo, swim, or surf with me. Jam with music and many other fun stuff.

Do my top choices match up with what I want?

Like I said before, I’m also hoping to make a lot asian or latino friends. Male or female.

Any thoughts on College 8’s location on campus? I’m concerned it’s a bit isolated.

As I have learned from other People,
Oaaaaakes Slug life!

Hey so I also have a similar question as everyone else. Whack is what college should I pick.

I have done a little research and decided that kresge, porter, and Oakes aren’t for me.

But the ones that I am contemplating on are cowell, Stevenson, c9, and c10.

A bit about me: I really want to pick a place where I can get a lot of studying done a also have a little fun and a good social life. I don’t mind to go to some parties but I don’t want to be engulfed in it. I love the outdoors and that’s a big part in it, I want to have friends that love to kayak, camp, go to the ocean, and ect. Also I am majoring in science and I want a strategically place college where it will suit me the best. Also the view is important.

Reson for college I’m debating;
Cowell: I heard it has a great location and it has a good Persian group, and I want to be affiliated witb my background.
Stevenson: heard good location and also a lot of Jews.
C9/c10: pretty much because it is newer. I heard it has a lot of Asians, can you varify that, I dont have any problems with them, it’s just I don’t want to be a minority there and feel awkward.

I hope this is enough info to categorize me into a college that fits me the best.

I’m a transfer and I’m planning on playing rugby, do I want college 8?

Geez. You sound perfectly split between Stevenson/Cowell and 9/10. I really can’t say that you’d fit in either group better than the other.

I also want to know what college I should pick. I’m trying to choose between Porter, Cowell, Stevenson, & C8.

Here’s some information about me

 1. I don’t mind people who smoke weed heavily, party, or partake in the consumption of any illegal drugs. I’d prefer to be around people who use many different types of drugs.
 2. I lift weights everyday and like hiking. I don’t really like jocks or the stereotypical sorority girl.
 3. I’m not artistic, preppy, or a jock.
 4. I love Santa Cruz and Northern California

I plan on attending UCSC in the fall and I’m having a lot of trouble making up my mind what College I would like to attend. I have lived in Las Vegas, NV my whole life and I go to a preppy private Catholic high school in the suburbs, although I am a non-practicing Jew (lol I know). I am not like many of the kids at my high school, however. I enjoy going to big parties and drinking and having a good time. I also love smoking weed frequently. I’ve experimented with psychadelics and enjoy doing them on occasion. I love listening to all types of music, mostly hip-hop and techno recently (yes techno not electro-house/dubstep I know the difference). I want to have this type of experience at Santa Cruz, but I also plan on studying and getting a good education. From the research I’ve done I feel as though Porter may be the best fit for me. My other choices would include Stevenson, Cowell, and Oakes. I was at first leaning toward Colleges 9/10 because they are newer and better quality from what I had heard. Some of my closest friends are Asian, but I don’t want to be the only white kid around you know? Any feedback on what you guys think would be best for me would be very greatly appreciated. Thank you

@PurpleHaze89: Lean toward Porter, then Stevenson. That’s mostly based on your first 2 points.

@Ecanfonzie: Sounds like you’re on the right track! I’d lean away from Cowell. 9/10 should probably be off your list, they don’t seem to fit you at all.

Okay so I was reading up on forums about UC Santa Cruz’s colleges and I need some help! I am currently a high school senior, and I have been admitted to UC Santa Cruz for the 2012 Fall Quarter. I am from SoCal, so I am looking for housing options on campus. I have no idea which college to pick, what they’re like, and what goes on in the individual colleges. I need help in finding a college that is best suited for me. I will supply some information about myself and my preferences, please inform me on which college would be the best for me.

My Info:

-My major has been designated as Business Management Economics.

-I’m kind of a big guy, 6’5 220 so I eat a lot and I enjoy eating.

-I played football and did track for three years in high school. I also played rugby for a local rugby club. I am interested in joining/trying out for UC Santa Cruz’s rugby club.

-I enjoy strength training, weight lifting, and fitness in general.

-I love any activity associated with the beach. I would also like to learn how to surf if possible.

-I would like to be housed with/near girls who are outgoing and also like beach related activities. (Preferably outgoing white girls) I’m not a racist! Just a personal preference.

-I’m friendly, outgoing, and respectful. I enjoy hanging out and socializing with people.

-My idea of a good time would be to go to the beach, check out places in town, going out with friends, or just kicking back with some beers and some good company.

-I would say I’m more of the sporty type of guy, I enjoy watching football and rugby.

-My weekly attire includes: vans, slim jeans, khakis, shorts, t-shirts (preferably plain unless sports affiliated), flannels, and hoodies.

I don’t mind alcohol, tobacco, or marijuana. However, I would like to stay from hardcore drugs such as meth and crack.

So that’s basically what I like and what I’m like. Please help me pick a college!

@Liesel thanks a lot for the tip
@CaptainJ I don’t know much besides from what I saw on my visit yesterday but Stevenson and Cowell are closer to the athletic facilities, and we also seem to have a lot of the same interests. I’m a business management economics major as well. I also eat all the time and I go to the gym pretty much every day. Rugby isn’t big in Vegas so I’ve never played it but other than that we seem to have a lot in common. Hopefully we meet up next year haha

No problem brother, I’ll hit you up when I’m on campus later this year!

CaptianJ You do sound like a Stevenson/Cowell person, also try checking our College 8.
I am assuming that you throw in T&F? I am thinking of joining the club ( I am a thrower) would be nice to see other Frosh there also.

I need help, just got accepted to ucsc dont know which college is for me basically im a asian and looking to be chill and do my thing. i can party but not partying is find i dont really care i can basically do whatever. i like working out too. i heard 9 and 10 are mostly asians and its chill should i go there or cowell? i dont know where to choose please help!

DeLost- lol you’re scaring me a bit because i do throw shot in track :o
hahaha

CaptainJ-Lol, I guessed roughly because of your size lol. I also throw Shotput and disc.

Looking for anyone’s thoughts on what college(s) would best fit me.

 • I’m white
 • I’m from socal
 • I surf but I also love snowboarding and wakeboarding
 • I like to party, drink, and smoke weed
 • I’m looking for down to earth people that know how to have a good time but can be serious when it comes to school
 • I wear hollister with jeans and flip flops
 • I’m not a big sports fan
 • I’m really outgoing like i’ll go up to people and introduce myself
 • I dont do hard drugs like meth and coke and would rather stay away from it
 • I’m good in school and I can be serious when I have to but i definitely don’t let it rule my life
 • Overall I’m a really nice guy who’s good in school and just wants to have fun

Thanks for anyone’s help :)

@UCSCboii College 8.

Hey Guys!

So, I’m not really sure what college to pick so I was hoping to get some help (:

Right now I’m between C9, C10, Crown, and Cowell.

I’m kind leaning to Crown because I’m really interested in the theme (Ethical Issues in Emerging Technologies) but from what I’ve heard, its mostly filled with nerds. Which I’m okay with but I kind of want to go to a college that’s very social. I don’t really want to be surrounded by people with no life. So is Crown just filled with super nerdy kids?

I was looking at Cowell because it does seem to be a social college, plus it has a great view of ocean and is near the gym(which I hope I’ll be going to often!). I think it’s theme( Imagining Justice Past and Present) is pretty interesting, but I’m still more interested in Crown’s theme.

I was thinking about C9 and C10 because they’re newer, and I assume that housing there is probably nicer? Is it true that they’re filled with Asians? Don’t have anything against them(in fact, I’m Filipino, so I’d fit in) but I don’t think I’d want to live in C9 or C10 if they’re not at all diverse.

For a bit I was thinking about Porter, but I’m not really “artsy”, so I don’t know how much I’d fit in, considering the theme.

I don’t mind weed or alcohol or any of that stuff. I want to be able to make a lot of friends! And I’m pretty outgoing! I would definitely say that I’m more of a nerd than a prep but I’m down to hang with anyone. Majoring in bioengineering!Basically I’m looking for a residential college that is pretty social, with nice dorms, and with accessibility to the rest of the campus.
