I was accepted into both UCR and CSU Long Beach. UCR has the title, but CSULB has the programs. UCR doesn't exactly have the best surrounding city, while going to CSULB will probably take me longer to graduate because of California's budget crisis. I'm not too worried about money; I'm prepared. I'm leaning towards CSULB because I love Long Beach, but UCR's "UC" title keeps pulling me back. I'm torn. What should I do?

The only added benefits of UCR over CSULB are whatever resources UCR has because it is a UC over a Cal State. If UCR doesn’t offer your major or program of study, it will not make a difference. Go for Long beach.

You will probably get the classes you need to graduate at a UC in 4 years vs. an over impacted csu campus. My d is graduating in 3.3 years at ucsd now. Long Beach has some terrible violent areas.

The program I’m interested in is impacted. Should I still go for it?

I get the idea that you want to go to Long Beach, but feel foolish passing up a UC. Try to take away the UC title and look at what each school has to offer based upon what you want out of a school.

I do not think you are the only person who will be passing up an UC to attend a CSU.

Good Luck and Congrats on having the choice.

Thank you very much!

I’ve decided to attend CSULB, but I’ll still visit both campuses, just to clarify.

Lots of students pick CSU LB, San Diego St, and Cal Poly over many UCs. Depends on major, how into DI sports you are, and other factors. A friend just picked SDSU over UC Santa Cruz b/c of the sports oriented school spirit and the city of San Diego.

I doubt that UCR would be any better than CSULB in terms of getting the classes you need to stay on track for graduation in 4 years.

I got into UCI and UCSC but I am choosing to go to a CSU because of cost! I think it depends more what you DO at your college, rather than the college you’re going to.

Good luck!
